Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

you're cute, you think we'll call up Hildeby instead of Jones or Petruzzelli. so adorable.
Just 3 games played each but...

Hildy: .935
Petruspaghetti: .866
Jones: .884

If this gap in play even remotely holds up, I don't think even Keefe would dare call up the others. This is mostly discussion fodder based on hypotheticals but the skillset and package/professional pedigree of Hildy has always intrigued me. After being a stud in Sweden, it wouldn't be crazy to hope for a strong AHL season here.

you have a lot more confidence in this organization even resembling a meritocracy than I do.

I'm getting down into LGM levels of cynicism when it comes to this team.

I mean, just look at who they called up on D from the Marlies most recently...

If they call up Jones it'll be to back up and not play, but I think if Hildy continues to be a very good AHL goalie they will be left without a choice if they need games out of one of them. Especially if Jones continues to look completely toast. They favor the vet, but not THAT much.

Fair point. If the gap between Hildy and Jones is as close as the gap between Kokk and Benoit then they'll favor the vet, yeah. My hypothetical presumes Jones is undeniably toast (sub .900) and Hildy is a legit AHL starter (.915-.920+). No way they call up Jones to play games if that's the scenario. That's not something they've done in the past.

Could it be much worse than employing a goalie as a starter that has had 1 good season out of 5 and a career .906 SV% (.902 in the playoffs)? Can't be afraid of playing players who outperform just because they're a particular age. Need to buck the trend.

Of course my scenario was under the presumption that Hildeby is a dominant AHL starter, Woll holding up as a legit tandem guy and Samsonov reverts back to Washington Samsonov, which as mentioned isn't the most realistic scenario. But it would be fun. And if Woll is the go-to guy, 3.5m for a goalie largely sitting on the bench could be better allocated elsewhere.

For me Klingberg is the obvious guy to cut bait on to clear money, but if they need to clear more money when an opportunity arises, Samsonov could be another if that above scenario plays out to some degree. We need to stop treating him like an untouchable starter. He's got zero track record. He's basically another Woll to me, except he makes 3.5. If he gets hot great, keep him, but if he has another Washington nightmare season then no need to stay loyal there if they have other options (and an opportunity to add a position of need).
So many variables here, I think it's too soon to draw any real conclusions but we basically agree on that point, IF Samsonov continues to be mediocre and IF Hilde continues to beast then it certainly becomes a lot more interesting in a couple of months.

Even then though, it feels like things could get awfully Leafy quickly running a Woll-Hilde tandem into the playoffs.

Dunno if it's any more likely than it getting Leafy with a Woll-Sammy tandem. Sammy put up a .898 in the playoffs last year after a .919 regular season, which is peak #Leafy already

Yeah it's purely hypothetical but what fun are early season small samples without over-analyzing them and dreaming up scenarios on forumice.com?

Running two rookie goalies would at least be bold and interesting. A nice break from the boring, sucking, left wing rotating, fourth line tinkering, choking, basic, David Kampf, robotic, low event, baby back bitch team we've been watching the last couple years.

And honestly, I’m not opposed to the Woll-Hildeby fever dream. Sammy should get a couple more months to get his shit together of course.

But if he doesn’t turn things around and Hildeby keeps putting up star numbers in the AHL, Samsonov’s $3.5M cap hit represents an opportunity.

okay I'm on team LGM. or at least I'm gonna try.

It’s the way to go. I may be naturally cynical, but this is supposed to be entertainment, dammit.

And someday, we’ll be back to watching a Leaf team with the equivalent of Matt Stajan or Tyler Bozak as their #1 center. So may as well take as much enjoyment as possible out of Auston Matthews scoring a hat trick every other night while we can.

If they target and acquire a particular type of player that I do not approve of, my zen meter may hit all-time lows.

But for now I'm always gonna be stressed and on edge. That's a large part of the fun for me in following a professional sports team.

#TeamPanic

It's too bad because if we could win even a couple rounds I feel like this is an era that would still be looked back on with a lot of nostalgia one day.

I'm not sure it takes that much. I definitely am TeamLGM in that I think getting to watch Matthews will feel special when he's not here anymore.
