Lou Lamoriello named Leaf GM

The entire media seems to assume that everything the Leafs have done this off-season is dead and buried cause they hired an old guy.

Darren Dreger has a spin that the "Insiders" heard Lou might go to Toronto during the cup finals.

Bullshit. They would have reported it immediately. They whore out the Leafs name any chance they get for attention.

Seeing Dreger talk of how it "Unfolded" and acting like he knew it all along is hilarious. They're credibility is hurt and they know it.

Damien Cox likes the move, so that's something. He pointed out Lou won't be taking unilateral control.

The way I see it if Lou starts going of script he'll get rained in pretty quick. Dubas and Hunter have Shanny's ear and aren't going to sit there quietly of they aren't being listened to.

Yeah, Cox and McCown thought it was a really shrewd move.

The more I think about it, the more I like the hiring, and Shanahan's overall setup here. It's exactly how I would run a team. Anyone who stubbornly manages without employing analytics is just as idiotic as somone who uses a computer to sum up every player in a single statistical number, without looking at any other factors. Here we have a high-end scouting guy in Hunter who knows prospects inside-out, and brings a strong scouting point-of-view to the table. Dubas appears to be one of the top analytics guys out there. He crunches the numbers, and looks at other factors as well. But all three (Shanahan, Dubas, Hunter) are relatively inexperienced. So now we bring in a guy who has been an NHL GM for a long-ass time, who knows the league, the CBA, and the other GM's inside-out. Throw in a cap guy and a bunch of other opinions as well. You evaluate all of the information, and make the best decisions possible on acquiring players. Then you turn them over to the best coach in the league. Its a very ****ing strong team he's put together.

Shanahan has gone after the best talent at every position. Dubas is on the forefront of the analytics movement, and is arguably the best future GM out there. Mark Hunter is one of the top scouts in hockey. Brandon Pridham wrote the damn CBA. And Lou is the best, most experienced GM they could have hired. Babcock is the best coach in hockey. They all have roles. They all have a voice, and they all report up, directly or indirectly to Shany.

In Seigel's article he criticizes Lou's drafting and cap management in Jersey. Well they have other guys for that here. He didn't work with this group in Jersey. He didn't have the budget in Jersey to even consider putting a group like this together.

Nothing they have done was erased. Nothing changed. They simply replaced Nonis with Lou ****ing Lamoriello. In no universe is that a backwards move.

Haha Pierre Lebrun said the same thing yesterday. He said that at the time the media thought it was such a long shot they didn't think it was anything worth reporting.

Yeah right!

“(Lamoriello) comes into this job with his eyes wide open as to how I envisioned the organization, which is the same as Mike,” says Shanahan. “Which is that Brandon Pridham is just as important to him as anyone else that I’ve hired, in his own way. As is Mark Hunter. As is Kyle Dubas. As is the coach, and the GM. As is (Marlies coach) Sheldon Keefe.

“My challenge, and my job, is to make it all work. It’s to put the team together, and allow people to do their jobs, and I think I know Lou well enough that reputations and rumours aside, that he is not someone that only knows how to do things one way.”

Story: The Leafs took a shocking turn backward in picking Lou Lamoriello to guide their future. http://www.tsn.ca/talent/shanahan-betting-on-lamoriello-s-experience-in-turn-to-the-past-1.335372 …

Siegel's not a fan.

Siegel's a moron.

This is the same guy who was a jackass to Kessel, and then threw Rielly under the bus for his "girl" comment.

One of the things I'm looking forward to, is seeing how Babcock and now Papa Lou grab these ****s by the throat and hold them accountable for their bullshit. For too long these jackasses have said whatever they wanted, stirred up whatever shit they wanted, with complete impunity.

It's a shame the cup is won on the ice though. The front office acquisitions appear solid, now it needs to translate to the ice.

Sure, but the front office builds the team on the ice. Building the front office is the first, necessary step. Shanny surrounding himself with the best quality people possible sets the team up to have success on the ice down the road.

Players don't just materialize. These are the guys that are going to build it. And I have to say I have way more faith in Shanny/Lou/Babcock/Hunter/Dubas/Pridham, than JFJ/Maurice or Burke/Nonis/Poulin/Louiselle/Carlyle.

The amount of talent they've put in place in management is nothing but a positive for the future outlook of this team. Now these guys have to get to work.

The one thing that jumps out to me about the entire process Shanahan has conducted is the laser focus on character. Hunter, Dubas, Babcock, Lou etc are all known for solid, take no shit, character. Should any of your young prospects get traded, you can probably be sure there was a character issue there. The Leafs may still lose for a couple of more years but under these guys they'll lose the "right way" if you understand my meaning. Learning from losses.

Pretty much. It's funny how he decided to focus on these small negatives(over just a few year span basically) when there are so many more positives. Like the fact Devils under his management made the playoffs something like 22 out of 27 seasons. That's incredible imo.
