Maple Leafs @ Penguins - HNIC

Johnny Bower led the NHL in SV% in 6 of the 8 seasons prior to winning the cup in 67, won 2 Vezina's but should have won at least 2 more during that run. His run in the 60's is a top 2-3 run all time. Only beat by Hasek's run. He was better in the 60's than Plante was in the 50's, but the media fell all over themselves throwing vezina's at Plante for his run.

Bower was the best player on those teams.

Also fun is Florida's top players goal paces from last year's playoffs.

Verhaege: 38G
Reinhart: 34G
Barkov: 27G
Tkachuk: 21G

and the support group:

Rodrigues: 24
Bennett: 30
Tarasenko: 17

I don't see them waiting for 1-2 guys to rescue them and score all of the goals. They'd be waiting a long fucking time if they did.

Last 3 years combined, 82gm goal scoring pace

Auston: 37
Willy: 37
Tavares: 26
Mitch: 20
That is why you trade for Edmundson and schenn types!

So, we've all seen what the Leafs have to offer this season and we are well into it. Yes, there have been injuries but I honestly don't believe these have made any difference to us wrt winning games. Even though we are well up in the standings....what do you think the chances are of going deep in a cup run this year if they keep playing as they are in to the playoffs?

Bower was hurt in the 62 fina;, and for game 6 in 67. He sat on the bench, but was in no condition to play.

Bower was still the best player on those teams, and had a .971 in the 67 finals before he got hurt.

The underlying point is that those teams were fantastic. Bower specifically is a bit slept on as to how good he was because of how goaltending was evaluated up until fairly recently. GAA was king for decades, when it shouldn't have ever been.

Just to steal the most comprehensive ranking of best goalies of all time that's available as reference (bleacher report has a top 100 list online):

Rank/SV% titles/Career SV%/Vezinas

Plante: 5 - .920 - 7
Broduer: 0 - .912 - 4
Roy: 4 - .910 - 3
Sawchuk: 0 - .907 - 4 (first 5 years were prior to shot counting)
Dryden: 3 - .922 - 5
Hasek: 6 - .922 - 6
Hall: 2 - .918 - 3
Broda: 0 - ????? - 2 (entire career was prior to shot counting)
Durnan: 0 - ????? - 6 (prior to shot counting)
Bower: 6 - .922 - 2
Parent: 1 - .915 - 2

Bower should be considered a top 5 goalie of all time. He was Plante's equal and better than Sawchuk.

imo:

1) Hasek
2) Roy

With Plante, Bower, and Dryden all within a cunt hair for 3-4-5.

And he was the nicest person that could ever wanted to meet. I met him several times and consider it an honor to have done so

As for Broda, 5 cups without a backup...
