New Canadian Politics Thread

On monthly basis, jobs growth widely distributed by industry, but clearly driven by Ontario. Anything of that magnitude has to be Ontario.

Year over year, we see the impact of energy. Good numbers for ‘Berta.

Carney's performance thus far, for me, is highlighting how disappointing Trudeau was. Happy that he's banging a pop star and enraging magas, and I do think he cared and tried his best. But we can't forget that he was an unqualified nepo baby, after all.

Erin O’Toole would likely by PM if the Maple MAGAs and truckers hadn’t wrecked the CPC. Trudeau pretty much ceded the centre with his over the top meme-driven “leadership”, but they were too stupid to seize the moment.

Yeah.. that’s what I meant. Getting all effusive about recent TSX performance after a decade of lagging is a bit of misleading flag waving
Tis the nature of not having a diversified economy, and more importantly, not being heavily tech-driven. Lost decades are a thing. But yeah, those lost decades don't last forever.

One thing I’ll give to Justin is that he pulled the Liberal party back from oblivion in a way few others probably could have at that particular moment, and he also gave the coup de grace to Stephen Harper’s government and political career at a time when Harper was really starting to get unhinged and openly lean very hard into alt-right/US culture war bullshit.

I also appreciate his handling of Covid, as well as his own “Just watch me” moment where he stepped in for the feckless Provincial & municipal authorities and decisively crushed the Freedom Convoy.

But yeah, overall he is definitely a mimbo nepo baby that was a mediocre at best PM, and the difference between him and Carney is pretty night and day.

2nd gen nepo baby with enough wealth not to care about the economy. Just expand the government until it hurts

Jt was a natural leader. Never studied hard enough to earn any policy chops tho. But was always smart enough to delegate that stuff. But not good enough to have a detailed economic vision that would inspire his team to do anything but play it safe.

Maybe he was a “natural leader” in terms of the public-facing part of his job. But he doesn’t seem to have been a great people manager behind closed doors. The list of major cabinet ministers he had dramatic falling-outs with is rather long.

Senior political leaders are all massive divas though. The only way to keep them happy is to promote them constantly. They can’t really be managed.
