New Canadian Politics Thread

Yeah, kind of seems like a little bit of a "hey, Andy, you know that money you've been taking from the CPC fund? Would be a shame if we revealed what you used it for?"

Yeah, feels like party insiders knew and kept their mouths shut, then tried to push Scheer out after the election and when he refused to go and looked like a reasonable shot at keeping his job in April (as others have mentioned, the same coalition inside the party would have likely scraped together enough support to run it back with him...he's their guy), the insiders pulled out the nuclear option that was in their back pocket the entire time.

Wow, the news is treating this with kids gloves.

Resigning because of family? Fuck off, he was running to be the Prime Minister, he wouldn't have seen his family for 4 years had he won.

Resigning because Party members were out to get him? He has been fighting them election night and ready to bring this to April.

Malarkey.

Terrible optics but according to Conservative Party official it was all above board, agreed when he became leader. While there is nothing illegal about that perk, the cost of private schools for five kids is a bit much.

Agreed to by whom?

I doubt the entire party knew about it, I doubt the caucus knew about it.

It was "above board" in the same way that it was "above board" for long-time Ottawa resident Mike Duffy to claim a small, rarely-visited seasonal cottage in the Maritimes as his principal residence for the purpose of milking more money out of his job as a Canadian Senator.

Technically not against the rules, while at the same time it's clearly greasy as hell and immoral.

Yeah, just another thing Scheer did that wasn't against the rules per say, but greasy as hell.

Said he was a insurance broker, wasn't.

Attacked people like Dion and Michelle Jean for having dual citizenship, didn't start the process to renounce his american citizenship until a month before the election.

This is just another case of hypocrisy from the guy, and a completely unnecessary one. He was making 6 figures, he could afford this. As opposition leader, and as speaker, he got free housing, he got extra salary, paid for by the Canadian taxpayer.

Especially with the Conservative shots at Trudeau over his nanny expenses being paid for.

The modern political right is extremely predictable man. If they're claiming something about their political opponents, they're probably doing it, and worse.

I mean, Justin was stealing from taxpayers for that, whereas Scheer was only stealing from Conservative Party donations, so completely different situations. Duh!

I feel like Trudeau had the very same thoughts.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how the leadership goes. The fact that even with Andy they got within a hare of winning, gotta imagine that the race is going to be vicious as whoever wins has to know that they have a very good chance of winning the next election if Trudeau can't regain support. Will the hard side of the party come out again, or can the moderates take over?

As much shit as Scheer rightfully eats here, he's not the epic failure of a Conservative leader that he's going to be made out to be. It's more of a task than most people realize to keep the two main wings of the CPC from flinging their shit at each other.

The western Conservatives won't allow the party to shift towards the Ontario/Quebec political realities, and even with a super favourable vote split and a leader perceived as weak, the Conservatives couldn't get enough eastern support to win the big chair, because Eastern Canada doesn't have a whole lot of time for western conservatism.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of the undercurrents of the April meeting.

Caroline Mulroney will eventually be the leader. As soon as her pal Justin is no longer the opponent.

She sounds totally stable

@CBCAlerts
Jody Wilson-Raybould is refusing to vacate the entire suite of Parliament Hill offices she was assigned as a cabinet minister, despite the fact that she is now an Independent MP and is no longer entitled to the space.

The fact that both pro-life and pro-choice groups were ardently campaigning for Scheer's removal as CPC leader following the election is a pretty good illustration of the kind of tight rope you have to walk as the leader of that party.

A lot of that was brought on by Scheer's lack of balls and transparency.
