New Canadian Politics Thread

Anyone should be free to whine about anything like this. I mean, if you don't like what your company is doing, complain. If you still can't take it, quit. If they get enough complaints in the company, then they certainly don't have to publish him.

And otherwise, if no publisher wants to publish him, that's fine. That's their right - they can still self-publish if they want to get their word out. If someone does, that's fine as well. As long as the book itself isn't itself full of hate speech and the like, then any publisher should be free to publish it.

He will no doubt get published,, he's very marketable despite the negative baggage.

This is more about some employees at the shop having to work long hours to promote an author they find disgusting.

This is a very good take, IMO. Even more annoying than actual cancel culture is calling every criticism of certain conservative causes cancel culture. Why shouldn't free speech extend to criticizing Jordan Peterson?

I like the part in that double helix bit where he says something that is completely ridiculous and obvious bullshit (ancient tribes all over the world sequenced dna) then pivots off immediately by saying “but it’s too difficult to explain”.

What a guy.

How doesn’t that get challenged?

This is definitely a marketing push to get people to buy the book. The employees are probably crying from the way they're treated -- Penguin is a horrid employer and has been for a very long time.

For the past year, my wife has been baking muffins and other assorted goodies for the homeless each week.
She leaves them in the bus shelters where these individuals seem to congregate.
She was told to stop doing it by some worker because it might interfere with traffic or cause a disturbance.
We bought a bunch of blankets and such for Christmas gifts to keep them comfortable.
We were told not to leave them there because they might cause a ruckus.
We drive around after midnight, so we don't interfere with the needs of the public.
So, Go screw yourselves municipal jerks.
We don't care if you think these people don't deserve this stuff .... It is out choice and we will continue to place these goods to hopefully make their lives a little better.
Sorry all .... Just pissed me off when I hear about others trying to help and the government steps in and tries to stop it.

Some of you guys are overthinking it....Penguin ain't playing some 4d chess marketing game. They don't need to. Jordan P can call Joe Rogan tomorrow and get 3 hours to discuss his new book and the benefits of his new broccoli-soup only diet.

Consider this:

Penguin (like most publishers in Canada) pay their publicity staff peanuts. Workers are there because they love books, mostly of the progressive, inclusive, make the world a better place variety.

Peterson is basically Lord Voldemort to them. So they reacted in kind. It was probably a competition among employees to see who was the most outraged (I spent some time at CBC, so I know the deal)

"Local Employees unhappy with latest assignment" ain't much of a story, but most things involving Peterson makes for a good thread on twitter.

Penguin is buying Simon+Schuster for 2B+, so yeah, not like they need to drum up some fake publicity.

My ex and a number of her friends worked there. Truly toxic environment.

In terms of that story getting out, sure could have been done without the help of pr.

Opps.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office sent out a statement detailing a conversation he had with Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole before the call actually took place.(The Canadian Press/Adrian Wyld)

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's attempt to call out the Conservative Party for promoting misinformation about COVID-19 stumbled tonight when PMO staff sent out a draft statement that itself contained misinformation.

Trudeau and Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole had a call scheduled for this evening. The usual practice after these calls is for both parties to put out a statement — a "readout" — describing what was discussed during the call.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. this evening, the Prime Minister's Office issued just such a note saying Trudeau "raised concerns around COVID-19 misinformation being promoted by Conservative members of Parliament, given Conservative MPs recently downplayed the deaths of Canadians in Alberta due to COVID-19 and compared COVID-19 to the flu."

The call with O'Toole was not scheduled to take place until 5:15 p.m.

Are there any odds that a phone call happened before for some reason?

In this instance, no.

The Liberals have already admitted that the press release was prepared before the call and accidentally released. As it turns out the mentioned topic wee never discussed in the eventual 5:15pm phone call.

On the one hand, I feel bad for the people of Alberta.

On the other hand, I’m glad that Kenney left federal politics so that the damage he can cause is isolated to Alberta for the most part.

What do you mean? Alberta's doing great. We're keeping our numbers a hare below Ontario, and the strategy of only announcing the daily counts late in the day means it's never the top story on the national news.

Sure, if you actually care about case counts and deaths and stuff, Alberta's been piss-poor. But from a marketing point of view, Alberta's been doing a great job of just staying under the radar so people don't see the problems. And then this whole current lockdown which is not actually a lockdown? Beautiful. Was out at the mall yesterday, getting nice and crowded as we get towards the Christmas season.

Kenney forgot he was Kenney back in March/April when he was taking things seriously.

Picks a fight with medical workers in the middle of a pandemic. Doesn't lockdown, blames the SE asians, spend $4 million for the NHL to be here, etc etc

and he'll cruise to another majority in a couple of years.

and Albertans wonder why the rest of the country can't take them serious politically.
