New Canadian Politics Thread

Well I believe beleafer said that he knows someone from Venezuela AND he mentioned that he's an intellectual. So who are we to judge?

Out of curiosity—are there any credible and/or impartial international organizations that have rated Venezuela’s election as a free and fair democratic election?

You're not going to find one.

- The Maduro loyalist supreme court put Maduro loyalists on the elections commission
- The opposition parties boycotted the election
- Polling stations were run by members of the citizens militia of venezuela "to assist election workers", which is under the direct command of Maduro himself. It would be like Trump deputizing the Proud Boys and letting them literally operate the polling stations.

31% turnout.

all the Venezuelans I know could not be stronger in their anti-Chavez, anti-Maduro positions. the anecdotal evidence game is fun.

granted, many of them were also forced to emigrate.

Same. I worked with a pile of them in the energy industry. Wall to wall hatred of Chavez & Maduro. These weren't executives either. Equipment operators, health and safety, engineers, etc.

there should be some sort of common sense litmus test for different ideological positions.

eg. does supporting this ideology unabashedly and unreservedly mean I have to support and defend tyrants, despots, and autocrats? If yes, I would suggest the given ideology fails the test...

Whats funny is that history clearly shows that a strong mix of traditional left and right economics and politica is by far the best system.

Its no surprise that ideologues on either side end up being anti-democratic.

That’s the first thing he’s posted in a long time that I can actually agree with. Guess it only applies to Canadian politics.

There is definitely a disconnect in that I think many of us are arguing constantly that we don't generally have a problem with conservatives. Personality types mean that some people are inclined to be liberal or conservative, and neither side is always right.

It's that the GOP is the most corrupt and disgraceful organization I have ever seen. And it's not all Trump either, it was a horrifically bad party during the W years, and just became "horrifically bad" on steroids times a million under the dotard.

The gop is an extremist party.

They literally believe all government is bad. It is mainstream gop to want to get rid of all government. Cut everything. Deregulate everything. This is mainstream thought in the gop. If they were honest with themselves they would have to admit that they would have been arguing against the making of a federal government and constitution in the first place.

The democrats, on the other hand, are middle of the road. Even the furthest left in the party don't want actual socialism, and the bulk of the power of the party doesn't even want socialism in places it makes complete sense, like in Healthcare.

This is the fundamental disconnect. Why its simply never a bothsides issue usa right now. It's not a fight between left and right, it's between middle of the road and extreme anti-government right.

And this is why, of course, the extremist party is falling so easily into anti-democratic authoritarianism.
