Yep, don't care.

Where I appreciate his place in the history of the country, I don't blame people from different backgrounds for not viewing him the same (through his own opinions and actions) and I think we're beyond the time and place where it's cool with just shrugging and saying "well for his time he wasn't bad". There's no sense in carrying around certain types of historical baggage just for the sake of it. Teach the history accurately, discuss the good and bad, but I think we should be adult enough to realize that people from past eras had some really, really bad ideas that went along with their ideas about certain types of political/social freedoms that were trail blazing for the time period. I also think that minorities who may view some of those historical figures differently, have the right to not have to be reminded of some of the darkest times their people have endured when they're accessing public buildings/services that their tax money helps to pay for.

If private historical societies want to purchase land and put up statues, give'r. But public money shouldn't be going towards it imo.

I will never accept that we have to judge historical figures by the values we hold today.

How can we expect an historical figure say 1600-1900 to have believed in equality of races when basically no one in that time period did?

White guilt is real.

i do not care that much but my view is if you are fighting for your right to be an ******* you are doing it wrong

if it offends somebody and it is not big deal either way to me...do it

this is not big deal to me and if it helps for reconciliation ... perfect

as for the judging of historical figures - tell the truth of who they were both good and bad

I wouldn't put it past him, but tbh, Bin Salman is a nutter who likely saw this as an opportunity to "warn" the rest of the world from doing something like this in the future. We just happened to be a pretty good target for it. A member of "the west", minimal economic links to sever, unlikely to retaliate in any sort of real way. Bin Salman might have put in a courtesy call to the white house to get the green light, but he's also enough of a dick to go it alone imo.

This.

Or they finally figured out Canadians are just *******s that smile a lot.

I always wondered why people gave a shit about how history portrays them. They’re dead.

you realize that reconciliation does not mean "do whatever you are asked even if just by one person" right?

The mayor couldn't even state that people were "offended" by the statue, just that he didn't want anyone to be.

I wonder if he those same mythical people offended by the statue will give me all the $$ with his face on it, I will gladly assist them by removing that offence (my part of reconciliation).

Usually, oddly enough, it is guilt ridden white self loathers who take down statues that the allegedly offended group never asked.

I remember saying last year that next would be Jefferson and Washington. I was told on this board, nah, don't worry as they did things other than be slave owners unlike the CSA generals etc. That was a fair enough argument but here we are a year later and even those who had more good than bad, a father of this great country is now facing the wrath of white guilt.

When people can find reasons to crap on Tommy Douglas, you know we have gone too far.

Habsy is right, it is better just to hate everyone.

Okay, I have a question. At what point does someone achieve so much good that we're required to completely and blatantly ignore the bad? To borrow a Chris Rock joke for a moment, if your uncle molests you, but paid for you to go to college, are you supposed to just let it slide?

Why can't we just have an adult view of history and stop deifying people for their achievements? If we're going to celebrate things, why don't we celebrate the moments and achievements instead of singling out the individuals and separating them for veneration away from their achievements.

For example:

Without googling, name the soldiers in that statue. It's one of the most memorialized moments of modern American history, but they didn't separate the individuals from the moment to raise them above what the moment meant. Fact of the matter is, achieving anything or worth is a team effort. Putting one face on the moment does a disservice to the team that achieved it.
