New Canadian Politics Thread

Fwiw, I'm counting the 6% with the 27%. If you're not with us, you're against us on this one. That's 33% of CPC voters that are political flat earthers.

Like was mentioned previously, this is exactly why I don't think I'd ever be able to bring myself to vote for the party. Any politician beholden to that level of stupidity to ensure future election success is dangerous whether they intend to be or not. You can only deny reality for so long until reality stops giving a fuck what you think and deals with you.
Exactly. It doesn't matter how dumb or inoffensive the party leader is, if you have that kind of rot in a party it can eventually mutate into what the GOP is today. You can dismiss Trump as an idiot but there are smart people in his inner circle who can make him a useful idiot. The willful ignorance and overall stupidity of CPC voters can be weaponized by bad actors with a plan. We can't just keep hoping for them to step on rakes at the last minute. They need to be dealt with.

I mean we can just look to conservative premiers collective pandemic management to see this in action, and yeah, I want no part of it.

*Tim Houston excepted!

I think people are really inclined to go lenient on politicians because of the pandemic, especially those who don't follow the news/modelling/science nerds screaming to do certain things weeks and weeks in advance.

Hear a lot of "But they didn't know it'd be like this" from people in real life.

Yeah, there’s no functional difference between “I don’t know/won’t say who won the election” and “Trump won the election.”

The only people who have any doubts on that score are people living in the Alternate Facts Cinematic Universe.

And 33% is very much not a tiny, lunatic fringe portion of your base. That’s a very sizeable chunk that the party is going to try their damndest to keep happy and hang on to, especially with another party now actively trying to siphon off those voters.

On the upside, if the “anti-Ford” vote is going to coalesce behind one party, I’d expect that to happen a lot closer to the election, rather than this far out from it.

On the downside, the Libs & NDP are both led by complete duds, which is going to make it harder for one of them to rally the anti-Ford voters to their banner.

Yeah, the anti-Ford vote is split down the middle. Problem is both the NDP and Libs are too stubborn in their own ways that neither will give ground, and it's probably going to split between them again.

the real problem

Yeah, this would have been a golden chance for someone like Singh to jump back to provincial politics. Even if he's annoyed a lot of Liberals federally, I have to imagine if he was the NDP leader going into the next election he'd be way ahead in the polls.

Or had the Liberals not elected someone who's wikipedia page redirects to "Establishment" and who lost their riding in the last election by 20 points. If the Libs had Coteau leading the party, with more talks about a fresh start and stuff, they would be in so much better shape to galvanise support.

Some of my family members voted for Ford. When I asked why they told me how great it was that when there was a power outage at somebody's home near where he lives, he called Hydro One himself and made sure they got their power back. OK.

Emergency shovel.

Untied boots.

Staff member's car.

Clown.

So many people fall for this shit. So many.

But it actually undermines the true role of local government. Rob & Doug used to be classic for this in Rexdale as councillors. They would give out a phone number to their constituents and let them know if they needed pothole repair, to call them (personally!!) and by golly, they would make sure those fat cats at city hall got it done asap! Problem being, there is an actual contact line for pothole repair in Toronto (311) and they prioritize repair based on actual city management factors like how busy the roadway is based off of previous density and traffic flow studies, etc and by most accounts were actually pretty fucking efficient at it. But those 2 muppets would lean on the department and divert resources to prioritize random potholes on Rexdale side streets, then go do a photo op with the road crew and the homeowner that called in.

Transparent pandering that actually makes the city a worse place to live. Ford politics.
