New Canadian Politics Thread

I fail to see a downside to this and I can only assume that the reason they no longer enjoy coming to Canada is because of the foreign buyers tax and the crackdown on money laundering at Vancouver area casinos.

For some bizarre reason the People's Party has decided to make an example of Canada. I don't see what they're getting out of it.

The reason is government propaganda. People need to be able to distinguish between the CPC and the average Chinese person. They’re not the same. Being disliked by the people of most populous country in the world, as a soft middle power, is very a bad thing.

Isn't expecting a poll from a state run media outlet in China to reflect the opinion of Chinese people and not the current opinion of the CCP a bit naive?

We’ve been a convenient punching bag for them ever since the Meng Wanzhou affair. And it’s probably going to stay that way for the foreseeable future, since that whole situation concluded with Canada holding firm to the rule of law and its treaty obligations, rather than kowtowing to China’s demands, threats and hostage diplomacy.

In China’s wider Cold War against Western democracy and the rule of law, we’re also an easy, safe, non-threatening target for them.

We should wear it like a badge of honour then.

This is why keeping America from authoritarianism is so important. Even just the soft power they throw around is massively important. For example, they're only threatening russia with economic sanctions and military intervention isn't on the table in Ukraine...but America shutting you out of the banking system is fucking crippling....so Russia shakes its fist and continues no so quietly undermining instead.

Notice that they are both thin skinned authoritarian regimes currently engaged in ethnic cleansing/war crimes.

One little skin prick sends them into mushroom cloud territory. Totally out of proportion…

Interesting opinion here that the undermining is not working and that’s why Vlad is getting shouty:

I agree entirely that his goal here is absolutely to get an agreement that keeps Ukraine out of nato forever without paying the butchers bill.

I don't like his chances.

Freudian slip?

Well, well, well, guess where the funding for the "Freedom Convoy" is coming from? No surprises here.

It’s pretty funny just how desperate Conservative media, politicians and social media posters are to get people to pay attention to and care about this “convoy”.

Meanwhile, a pitifully small handful of trucks will probably end up rolling into Ottawa in the end, and the grifters who organized this thing will walk away with millions in donations.
