New Canadian Politics Thread

this reminds me somewhat of the Harper years, where he kept winning elections arguably as much due to the incompetence of the Liberals as opposed to anything he did.

well, now the tables have turned, and the utter incompetence and lunatic fringe of the CPC is doing its best to ensure Trudeau reigns for over a decade. dumdums.

hell, would not surprise me to see the CPC fracture again. the crazies want to make sure the tent is small enough that they are unlikely to ever govern.

This was O'Toole's pitch. The party has to appeal to centrist voters or it will become the NDP of the right. Well, that approach was just soundly rejected.

I think they either try to "unite the right" now, which means a CPC/PPC union and a leadership race in which Max Bernier is a genuine contender, or they choose some more establishment candidate and splinter. Poilievre is probably the party's best chance to hold onto the maniac wing, but he's not going to make up any ground in other areas so choosing him would probably just delay the splinter.

Do Kenney and Ford throw their hats into the ring?

Ford claimed just yesterday that he wasn’t going to, but the guy’s a habitual liar, and a very similar kind of circumstance is how he ended up in charge of the Ontario PC’s, so who knows?

As for Kenney, isn’t he scandal-plagued and spectacularly unpopular right now even in Alberta? Never mind that his time as Alberta Premier hasn’t endeared him to the rest of Canada.

The longer this titanic takes to sink, the better. Delay the splintering!

If they delay the leadership election until late summer or Fall, then I could see Doug toss his hat in if they lose the election. The timing would be tough for him to jump in before that as despite how un-principled he is, I can't imagine him bailing on the provincial party this close to an election.

So you're saying we're just waiting for Ben Mulroney to make his way into the race?

Even aside from the principle of the thing, he’d be in a stronger position to campaign for the federal job as a recently re-elected Premier, rather than a Premier who bailed months before the election.

And as much as he’s deeply unpopular in segments of Ontario, when looking at who he’s competing against, I’d say he has a very good chance of getting re-elected.
