New Canadian Politics Thread

Speculation is Trudeau will step down as leader but stay on as PM and ask Governor General to pirogue parliament until March.

It really is amazing how many political leaders do the “I’m stepping down, but staying on until my successor is chosen” routine.

Even though it’s always a clusterfuck and much worse than just ripping off the bandaid & stepping down immediately, and picking an interim leader in the meantime.

Also wouldn’t be surprised at all if he prorogues parliament. He’ll want to drag out his own time as PM as long as possible, as well as give the Liberals the chance to pick a new leader before facing a no confidence vote.

Trudeau can't name a new leader because then that leader will have been hand picked by the guy everyone wants to be rid of. Anyone who comes next has to have no perceived connection to JT other than party affiliation or they will be DOA.

You missed the part where I said “Interim leader”.

Of course Trudeau can’t just annoint his successor. That’d be a catastrophe. They need to go through a full leadership contest and (hopefully) pick someone with zero input from Trudeau, and as little connection to the previous government as possible.

But in the meantime, Trudeau could step down immediately, and then some well-liked party elder who has no interest in running for the full-time leader job can fill in as interim leader until the party has officially selected its new leader.

Did Trudeau change his mind? 🤣 He’s late. Not very thoughtful making the press stand out waiting in the bitter cold just to answer four questions.

Ah. Here we go.

I don't think you need to have another caretaker come in for the short time while you have the leader selection. Having JT stick around as PM until the new leader is selected is not a big deal.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "well liked" party elder in the Liberal caucus anymore.

and honestly kinda makes sense to have him be the guy to deal with dotard during the transition, rather than an even lamer-duck interim leader.

what I expect to happen is something along the lines of:
- JT resigns as Liberal Leader;
- JT stays on as PM until a replacement is found;
- JT requests the GG prorogue Parliament so that the Libs can finish a leadership convention
- GG prorogues Parliament, Libs have a 3-4 month leadership race
- once Parliament sits again, no-confidence vote, spring/summer election

and of course these dumb fucking Liberals never passed their key change to capital gains inclusion rates, so that's gonna fucking die.

woulda been absolutely massive to help combat tax avoidance.
