New Canadian Politics Thread

Yep, even when I was in high school back in the early 80's many of my classmates who had fathers and grandfathers working at the GM plant in Oshawa just figured they'd do the same thing; walk out of their high school after 12th grade one day and start making big union money the next day putting bolt "A" into slot "B" for 40 hours a week. But even back then those days were already over. Precisely nobody was getting into GM that easy and the company was in the early stages of automation and downsizing.

Some of those clowns sat around for the next 30 years waiting for a sweet, high paying, do nothing job that never came and had stopped being a reality before they ever entered the work force.

When I was a kid, the locals used to refer to GM as "Generous Motors". Nobody calls it that now.

I swear, every single one of the minions and lackeys in Trump or Musk’s orbit look like incel losers badly in need of an atomic wedgie and getting dunked head-first into a toilet.

That's so 2024

There's a bag of other things we should be looking at as well

- Ban foreign media ownership (looking at you postmedia)
- An immediate non partisan federal task force committed to unfucking our military procurement policies. There is no point throwing a bag of money into a broken system with literally weekly updates to the HoC on progress. This is a national emergency.
- As soon as that is unfuckered, joint development programs with the Swedes, Brits, French and South Koreans on any useful system that they'll let us produce domestically. Couple that with a significant increase in expenditure and it's not the same type of economic drag it is when you're throwing 10's of billions out the door at US contractors doing all of the building elsewhere. If this is what the future looks like, we need a domestic arms industry.

Where do you get Nukes? Amazon Prime ?

The Iranians have a fraction of our wealth and nuclear expertise as a nation, and they can enrich enough uranium for a bomb in 4 months if left unattended.

It takes 5-10kg of enriched uranium to build a smallish nuclear bomb. Canada has a reserve of 600,000 tonnes of uranium and we mine about 14,000 tonnes of it a year.

Yup. Would take us 6-12 months.

If we're not safe, we're not safe and we need to fix that immediately.

i agree but kind of difficult to convince the US that we'd be willing to use it considering 95% of our population would be fucked

but definitely useful to send a message to Russia, China, NK without needing US help

But there's no chance Dorito and his band of merry fascists are allowing us to do this now, right?

With the US, it becomes a "the juice isn't worth the squeeze" play. Nothing we have is worth the risk to them as we're a mercantile nation who will sell them whatever they want anyway. Why risk Chicago being a crater when they can just buy shit off of us?

this article from 2018 says it would take a few years... apparently producing the plutonium required is a bottleneck

my thinking is that the US wants to do a "wink wink with Russia"...with the pretense that our Arctic sovereignty is a Putin decision away from becoming undone unless we let the US "save" us for a king's ransom

You can thank the Conservatives under Diefenbaker for canceling the Avro Arrow program, making us dependent on the US for our military arsenal, and losing all our big brains to NASA and a bunch of US defense contractors 65 years ago.

Isn’t that the case in every nuclear deterrence scenario?

Mutually assured destruction, and all that.
