New Canadian Politics Thread

There is one form of immigration that Carney should be against and it involves birthright citizenship.

One of my brother's friends in Toronto is a doctor. She tells him that there is a burgeoning market in "passport tourism" which she has seen in action at the hospital in which she works. Wealthy foreigners (mostly Persians) are scheduling c-sections in Canada to coincide with their "vacations". The kid gets born in Toronto and "presto", an instant anchor baby has arrived. There's an entire cottage industry of lawyers in Toronto who get paid very well to facilitate this chicanery too.

Eh, I don't want to become a country that governs based on edge cases. All "non resident" births are 1-2% of total births in a busy year. That's not birth tourism births, that's total births to all non residents.

The Liberals putting an immigration freeze in place already is going to help him on that front. Really easy to point to the current policy and say that we need to get some other things handled before being able to put a forward looking immigration policy together, etc. Immigration has only become unpopular because of the housing price crisis. Just pivot to talk about home prices whenever immigration comes up.

Whenever the election happens, most of the oxygen in the room is going to get sucked up by tariffs, trade, trump, cost of living, jobs, etc. It's going to be a meat and potatoes (lol, fuck you zeke) election.
I have a family member who swung right over the past couple of years, and this is a big issue. I argue it's overblown, and also straight up racism for a lot of people on this issue (around the world), but it is hard to argue with regard to the housing crisis. There are not enough homes for everyone so why not slow down bringing new people in while we build some ... is not a crazy argument.

Yeah, when multiple issues rub up against each other, it's a bad idea to just say "you're a fucking racists" when someone complains about it. Does this very legitimate issue provide cover fire for racists who otherwise didn't want immigrants in the first place? Sure, but then it's our fucking fault for allowing such a bedrock issue to devolve this far.

The biggest wild card in my opinion is Trump and what's he's doing a couple months from now. Because he's going to do everything in his power to get PP elected. And it wouldn't surprise me if that included threatening war.

I dunno—I don’t think Trump will give two shits about helping Poilievre unless he clearly and abjectly swears fealty to Trump and keeps doing that over and over again. Dog whistling won’t be good enough.

Help for PP is more likely to come from Elon and his fellow pro-Trump broligarchs, as well as from Trump-friendly media organs north and south of the border.

Yes this may be true.
