It's a MAGA thing. Alito, Bill Barr, and a bunch of other far right Republicans are all drawn from a cabal of ultra secret, Opus Dei Catholics.

When I was a practicing Catholic, you'd go to mass on Ash Wednesday and they'd make a tiny cross on your forehead that just looked like a smudge about an inch big. Now they give you the mark of the beast or some shit, and Uber Catholics from Marky Mark to Brit Hume appear on TV looking like the cultists they are. It's right wing virtue signaling.
