New Canadian Politics Thread

Another echo of Russia in the build-up to their invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine supposedly had secret bio-weapon labs specifically targeting Russia, as per Russian state propaganda.

Now US state propaganda is saying Canada has secret government-sanctioned Fentanyl labs, for the purpose of flooding the USA with drugs.

Just steadily building the bullshit case for a war of conquest in their supporters minds.

Start learning how to build drones.

Going from being buddy-buddy with Obama, to dealing with 4 full years of Trump, then a pandemic, and then even just a couple months of Trump2, yeah, he's basically the modern equivalent of a war-time leader.

Also, if Carney wins the PM seat, him stepping aside to avoid a quisling populist will look like political genius mixed with flag humping levela of patriotism.

Don’t know if it has been discussed here, but China is also slapping tariffs on Canada, in response to the 100% surtax we’ve put on Chinese EVs and a few other products over the last few months.

To China’s credit, they are responding to something we did first, they appear to have left some room for negotiation before their tariffs come into effect, and they are not linking their tariffs to a fake drug problem or threatening to annex us or destroy us, despite having a much bigger economy, military, and population.

I think this helps put into perspective just how fucked up Trump’s attack on Canada is.
Canada should remove the tariffs on Chinese EV's and slap it on to all Tesla products.

Outside of those who held the office during the World Wars, it's hard to think of any Canadian PM in history who's been dealt a shittier hand almost from the moment he took office and throughout his time on the job.

Wild to think just how completely different and easier his job would've been if the backdrop to his time in power had been eight years of a Clinton presidency south of the border.

I mean this fucks the Canadian autoworker so this needs to be done more strategically. But I agree, as I posted earlier, that we should be trying to negotiate some type of compromise joint manufacturing and IP agreement.

Canadian autoworkers have been fucked for years as automakers have continually moved manufacturing jobs to Mexico. There's hardly any left to fuck over, quite frankly.

And fucking over Musk is more important right now.

I have to say, it is pretty annoying that the next Liberal leader will be selected by a well-thought-out ranked ballot process that makes sure the person with the broadest support of the entire electorate wins.

…yet Trudeau chickened out on implementing that for Canadian elections, after running on doing that in 2015. If he had, PP and the CPC in its current form wouldn’t ever have a prayer of forming a majority government.

I should know the answer to this but my muddled brain isn’t coming up with a answer.

If Carney wins the leadership how does it work since he doesn’t have a seat in parliament ?

Also from what I have heard the voting system has been messed up and at lease as of last night many voters register to vote have not been able to cast their vote.

The leader of the party that forms the government automatically becomes PM, even if they doesn’t have a seat in parliament.

Funny enough, the last time it happened was in 1984, when Trudeau Sr. resigned and John Turner, who was not a sitting MP, won the Liberal leadership contest. During his time in PM, he had to attend parliament sitting in the visitor’s gallery.

And as is the case any time someone wins a party leadership but doesn’t have a seat in parliament, the convention is for another MP to step aside so the new leader can run for their seat in a by-election. Though that won’t be necessary in this case, since we’ll likely head almost immediately into a federal election.
