New Canadian Politics Thread

Carney just wrapped up his first press conference since the election. Some notable announcements:

  • He’ll be travelling to Washington on Tuesday to begin trade & security negotiations with Trump.

  • King Charles will deliver the throne speech to Canadian Parliament later this month (likely the 26th or 27th). This will be the first time the sitting monarch has delivered the Canadian throne speech since Queen Elizabeth in 1977.

  • His new cabinet will be announced in about a week-and-a-half. No details offered on its makeup.

  • He ruled out any kind of formal coalition with the NDP or Bloc.
Also mentioned that he won't play games and will not get in the way of PP getting back in.

Not surprised. I was saying it on election night, everything he's looking to do will find support from somewhere and no one is looking for a vote of non confidence for at least 18-24 months. Shit the NDP will probably support anything the Liberals do for longer than that to avoid an election.

If Carney comes out as aggressive a nation builder as he campaigned, I don't see getting votes to enact the legislation being a problem.

Both the NDP and the Conservatives are broke. Carney will probably get to 4 years

At some point in the next two years, the NDP will have a new leader and a desire to return to official party status. It’s possible that’s what triggers it, especially if Carney looks to be along ground in QC (and hence the Bloc wants another election as well.)

It's complicated though. The NDP obviously wants to regain relevance, but they're in a weird position of being broke but having more influence with 7 MP's than they would have coming out of a future election where they win ~20 seats but the CPC wins a majority...because make no fucking mistake, if Carney is unsuccessful in getting his agenda passed and we waffle for the next 18-24 months, for every left wing vote that flows back to the NDP, a centristish vote is flowing to the Conservatives and the CPC will have a majority.

Yeah, every time I start to consider myself a progressive I get reminded that people like this exist. The left wing circular firing squad is real.

Definitely seems like the type of “progressive” that loves the feeling of moral superiority imbued by making #bothsides type arguments. And who in his all-consuming quest for ideological purity, fails to see the forest for the trees.

And from a quick glance through his Twitter feed, it’s completely exhausting wall-to-wall identity politics.

imo, when I see muppets like this featured in major newspapers, it feels like #controlledopposition to me. Provide insufferable smarmy leftist cunts with a platform so that they can make progressive ideas seem less approachable to people.

The idea that something can't on balance be a force for good without being 100% morally pure, and that we require to be bothsides'd whenever we start to feel good about ourselves really does just get in the fucking way of getting things done that makes Canadian society a better place to live.

100%.

It’s like when the token trans person who appears in Conservative media is an obese, bearded, purple-haired woman with a million facial piercings who declares that any straight man who’s unwilling to date them is a transphobe and bigot.

This is the kind of shit my dad has ranted to me about, like that kind of extremist, cartoonish caricature is in any way at all representative of any more than 0.0001% of the trans population.

It’s a frighteningly effective propaganda tactic, though.

the author, in my view, is either writing incredibly disingenuously, or just has a complete pie in the sky view of government.

Op-ed is a vacuous word salad and weirdly fatalist.

Canada has its warts for sure (and some of it is pretty dark), but there’s a path forward and plenty we can do. The past should not consign us to inaction or to downplay the things we can get right.

It’s a strange piece.
