New Canadian Politics Thread

In the real world it doesn't matter though. Hand the lunatic the gun and you're an accessory. I get what you're saying, I just don't fucking care about finding distinctions between people generating the same real world consequences as the wingnuts.
Precisely. They must ALL hang. The perpetrators and the enablers and Quislings.

I borrowed this from Reddit.

"Let’s Think About Who a Policy Actually Helps"**
I understand why you might believe conservative politicians care about everyday people. Their messaging often frames corporations as "job creators" and tax cuts as "helping everyone." But let’s test that idea with a simple question:
If a policy prioritizes corporate profits, who benefits most?
Imagine the economy as a garden:
  • Corporations = the tallest, strongest trees.
  • Citizens = smaller plants and flowers.
If you only pour fertilizer (tax breaks, deregulation) on the tallest trees, they’ll grow even bigger—but they’ll block sunlight and drain nutrients from the smaller plants. Soon, the garden becomes a forest of a few giants, while everything else struggles.
Conservative Policies in Action*
  1. Tax Cuts for the Wealthy:
Since the 1980s, corporate tax rates in conservative-led countries (e.g., U.S., UK, Canada) have dropped from ~40% to 15-21%. Meanwhile, wages for workers stagnated.
Result: CEOs now earn 399x more than workers (up from 20x in 1965).
  2. Deregulation:
Example: Alberta’s UCP cut safety inspections for oil/gas in 2020. Workplace deaths rose 41% in two years.
Who wins? Corporations save costs. Who loses? Workers and families.
  3. Defunding Public Services:
Privatizing healthcare, education, or utilities forces citizens to pay corporations for basics (e.g., U.S. healthcare costs 2x Canada’s with worse outcomes).

Why Do Politicians Do This?

  • Lobbying: Corporations spend billions to sway laws. In 2023, Big Oil lobbied Alberta’s government 50x more than healthcare/education groups.
  • Revolving Door: Many conservative politicians work for corporations after office. Example: 43% of Alberta’s former UCP staffers now lobby for energy/private healthcare firms.

The Propaganda Playbook

  1. Misdirection: Blame immigrants, "woke" activists, or "lazy" workers for economic struggles (distracting from corporate price gouging).
  2. False Equivalence: "If corporations thrive, everyone thrives!" But in 2023, while oil companies made $200B in record profits, Alberta had the highest inflation and food bank usage in Canada.
  3. Fear: "Regulations kill jobs!" Yet Germany, with strict labor/environmental laws, has lower unemployment than the U.S. or UK.

Ask Yourself

  • Why do conservative politicians fight harder to protect oil CEOs’ stock dividends than to cap grocery prices or fund hospitals?
  • If "trickle-down economics" works, why has wealth inequality grown for 50 years?
  • Why do corporations get bailouts (e.g., COVID loans), while student debt or childcare costs are called "personal responsibility"?

The Real Conservative Value (Twisted)

Traditional conservatism values community, stability, and stewardship. But today’s corporate-aligned conservatives exploit that language to justify policies that harm communities (e.g., cutting wildfire prevention budgets while subsidizing oil wells).
Final Thought:
You’re not "brainwashed"—you’ve been fed a story that sounds reasonable. But stories can be edited. Look at whose policies actually help: the 1% with lobbyists, or the 99% who just want affordable groceries, healthcare, and a fair shot.
A society that sacrifices its people for profit is like a farmer who eats their seed corn: it might fill their stomach today, but tomorrow, there’s nothing left to plant.

I'm agnostic on who we order subs from, but if SK can deliver in that timeline and they're competitive with French subs on performance, yeah let's fucking go. I was already hoping to see us engage SK for mobile arty, tanks, and MLRS system for reasons covered in the video. Fantastic gear, good prices, the ability to take delivery of enough to start the transition quickly while at the same time SK being extremely friendly to licensing for domestic production in Canada.

The author of this piece also writes for the Epoch Times---a far-right, pro-Trump publication that also dabbles in conspiracy theories. A quick glance through his Twitter also shows wall-to-wall pro-MAGA content.

So not a surprise he's not a fan of Carney.

It's nice though that he gives the game away in the first line and all you have to read is "Justin Trudeau's time is prime minister was marked by authoritarianism"

And yeah, this is a wingnut.

Yeah, as soon as anyone starts calling Trudeau an authoritarian or a dictator, you know you’re reading a piece by an anti-vaxxer/anti-masker who supported the freedom convoy.

And since there’s a huge amount of overlap between the groups, they’re very likely to be a fan of Trump and Qanon as well.
