I have to give Legault credit. He’s a bigoted piece of shit, but he’s a crafty operator.

Problem: Overt attacks on the Muslim, Sikh & Jewish ethnic minorities he’d like to chase out of the province don’t sell well with the public.

Solution: Cloak all of that in a “secularism” law that most Quebecquers fiercely support and can play pretend isn’t laser-focused on Jews, Muslims & Sikhs that have to go because they’ll never be considered “pur laine Québécois”.

Problem: Support for Quebec separatism & more referendums has been an electoral loser for a long time now.

Solution: Carefully design some wedge issues that’ll have the maximum level of support from Québécois and the maximum level of antipathy from the rest of Canada as part of a long game to get the current generation of Qubecquers to start thinking about how they’d be better off as a seperate country. To that end, come up with ideas like the one above and intensify attacks on Quebec’s English population as much as possible.

Scary thing is, he knows he can do all that and win majority. The guy is very slowly moving towards a referendum as he warned people he would. He always felt they were rushed too much in 80 and 95'. And the Feds will just let him do whatever he wants.

He'll lose, badly, and his party probably implodes if they pull this card and lose.




There's just no appetite for it, and even in a potential future where PP leads a minority government, he's way more likely to reach across to the Bloq than he is to the NDP for any necessarily coalition building. I don't see a political event on the horizon that would cause the shift needed for a referendum to make sense. He'll make those noises with his mouth to keep his base motivated though, definitely.

It's Montreal that should separate from Quebec and become a city state like Monaco or something. But Quebec would never allow this for several reasons. First and foremost, Montreal is the province's economic engine. Take Montreal out of the equation and Quebec instantly becomes a larger and poorer New Brunswick. And of course since Montreal is where the bulk of the non-pure laine population lives, losing Montreal means losing the convenient scapegoat that nationalists have used for decades upon which to blame all of Quebec's many problems. Get rid of anglos and these yobs would have to look in the mirror the next time something blew up in their faces. Shitting on the anglos and allos is a sure fire vote getter and applause generator for lazy politicians, even though English people stopped holding sway in Quebec about 60 years ago.
