It’s probably also petty revenge for Carney’s current European tour and cozying up with the EU on trade & security. In his heart of hearts, Trump still wants to annex us, or at the very least turn us into a vassal/satellite state. So any consequential moves by Canada counter to those goals will piss him off.
It also again illustrates the utter futility of engaging with Trump. He’ll keep pulling the rug out from under negotiations with new ridiculous demands, and even if we do come to an agreement, he won’t honour it.
Also hilarious to see Maple MAGA and CPC mouthpieces screeching on Twitter that this is a justifiable retaliation by Trump to the “Liberal digital services tax”.
As if every excuse Trump’s used so far to impose tariffs on Canada isn’t completely disingenuous bullshit.
There's no reason that those companies should be able to operate in Canada and earn revenue off of Canadian users without paying tax. 3% is in line with what the UK charges.
