There was a reasonable argument for Mitch to consider himself as valuable as Matthews last time - he scored 94pts to lead the team, way ahead of Matty, and the Tavares-Marner line was the "1st Line" that year while Matthews-Willy was the sheltered 2nd line.
And in the years before that he had been relegated mostly to a 3rd line minutes role with Bozak and JVR. And his coach had never even let him play with Matthews at that point. He wasn't nearly as valuable, but there were reasons for him to believe he was.
