No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

There was a reasonable argument for Mitch to consider himself as valuable as Matthews last time - he scored 94pts to lead the team, way ahead of Matty, and the Tavares-Marner line was the "1st Line" that year while Matthews-Willy was the sheltered 2nd line.

And in the years before that he had been relegated mostly to a 3rd line minutes role with Bozak and JVR. And his coach had never even let him play with Matthews at that point. He wasn't nearly as valuable, but there were reasons for him to believe he was.

But there aren't any arguments this time.

hey can point to whatever they want, but when he's just barely got his nose above PPG waters, he can't demand what Matty got.

He can demand whatever he wants though, that's what I'm saying. If he thinks someone on the open market will throw 13 x 7 at him and he's willing to dig in and chase free agency, we don't have a lot of choice.

That's a game of chicken I'm willing to play if he wants to be completely unreasonable. He slots in around where Willy will be, maybe a bit more because of past history, which is tempered by current performance. He needs to accept a fair deal, stretched of course to where they push it.

I don't buy that he'd ever leave the Leafs on his own, though. This kid has been wearing Leafs jerseys since he learned to skate. Nothing is going to be compelling enough to pull him out of the city.

Also, in Marner's case, the 7 year cap versus the 8 year contract we can give him will be important.

Even if someone wants to throw $13M at him while we're offering $12M, the extra year of $12M still nets him $5M more overall.

The mediots will be going wild about how San Jose or Buffalo or some other team is willing to pay Marner 15/7 and then his team will try to spin only wanting Matthews money as a home town discount.

We'll hear "Taxes" somehow and no one will mention his NHL most endorsement deals he has that he'll lose

In retrospect the Marner contract was fine through the first 4 years.

9th highest cap hit, 12th cap%, 6th in ppg, 13th in xGF% (min 2000 mins).

He earned it.

The Hart kind of takes him out of the Matthews sphere though. His comps are Pastrnak and Panarin.

Sounds like he probably would have taken 10 before the season started. Most would have mocked the Leafs for that because mEiEr iS bEtTeR.

Ah well.

Here's my high take.

Nylander gets 11 x 8
Mitchy next year pulls a Britney and breaks away from his father and gets the same or 11.5 as a team discount maybe x 5 with a whole bunch of new advertising opportunities.

After next year Tavares passes the C to Matthews and signs a 3 year deal for 5 mill.

Yup, in retrospect, yet another bad decision to wait.

The wait strategy with the big 3 has killed us throughout the years. Although the Matty extension this time around is probably as fair as fair can get, maybe even at a discount as we go.

If you keep all these guys who are you trading for Vladaar?
