Marner: +16 off, +3 D, +19 overall
Willy: +9, - 1, +8

This year
Willy: +19, -1, +18
Marner: +10 off, -2 def, +8

Dom has them freaky fridaying bodies this offseason.

Being worth 11 million dollar does mean that you're pretty awesome. It's kind of baked into the conversation if you've accepted that. I think the "anti" Marner argument is that he's not worth the Auston Matthews money that we assume he's going to try to hold us to the fire and demand.

Even though we're past the point of the season where you could call it a "start", but agreed.

I think we've been the most consistent defenders of Marner through the years.

The "problem" is, Nylander has actually grown to become as good as Marner overall, even if/when Marner returns to form. They're both insanely valuable, it's just a matter of trying to save a few bucks if we can.

The beauty of the situation now is that if Matty finds a way to score 60-70 this year, and if Marner doesn't extend this summer, carries that performance into next season, Marner won't be able to ask for Matty money, even when he inevitably gets his groove back next year.
 
I promise it's okay to acknowledge that Marner has been bad by his standards this year. No one is saying he sucks. He has had an off-year and if he continues this form into next year there will be implications on his next contract.

But I suspect he'll snap out of it at some point, at least somewhat.

That crazy keepaway play he made the other night where he eventually got it to Matty and we scored, it felt like he was finding his way back finally.

That was vintage Marner.

I'm not nearly as confident as you that reality means much to Team Marner in contract negotations. If we offer him Willy (11-11.25 x 8) on an extension, he's going to point to Matthews money regardless of his form over the next 12 months.

They can point to whatever they want, but when he's just barely got his nose above PPG waters, he can't demand what Matty got.

Especially if Willy is kicking his ass at the same time and doesn't extend for an outrageous amount.

I didn't disagree with what he got last time around. We had all those debates about goals being worth more than assists, and center being worth more than winger, his defensive contributions on the PK versus none from Matty, but at the end of the day, I always felt he was just as critical to our success as Matty. I always mocked FI with "overpaid" comments when he'd play out of his mind to rub it in.

But this year is totally different.
