No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

I'm keenly interested in Zekes recent name of mcdonaugh. If you can get him even slightly retained. I think that is a solid move alowwong for a Brodie replacement with some experience and toughness.

Here's a doozy I would probably fantasize about l know is not possible cuz of ntcs....but anything is possible.

Huge trade idea....
Leafs trade Marner, Brodie + Reeves and Robertson? Or some other things to Nashville for

Jusse Saros
Roman josi
Mcdonaugh with retention
Colton Sisson

Who says no.?

(PS... Tonight's selection through out the day has been pineapple express)

We need a true top pair guy. none of this "Ok #4" crap. Time to address our needs.

Leafs middle 6/bottom4: +16
Betuzzi (+7)-Krok(+1)-Marner (+7)
Knies (-2)-Domi (-2)-Robertson(-1)

McCabe (-3)-Benoit (+1)
Brodie (-5)-Timmins (+13)

Though in fairness their current bottom 5 doesn't totally erase the core 5 (-51 vs 65).

Gregor(-14)-Kampf(-15)-McMann(-11)
Gio (-6)-Brodie (-5)

For curiosity here is a random sampling of the top teams actual +/- Doms of their uninjured lineup so far this year:

Edmonton: 90
Vancouver: 73
Colorado: 63
Carolina: 60
Vegas: 48
Toronto: 26

Obviously not a perfect science but that’s a pretty large gap.

It’s a pretty simple fix though. Of note our 4th line is -40. Even if we just swapped out our 4th line for the next worst 4th line (oilers -18) that puts us at 48. Marner rebounding gets us back in the 60ish mix. Moneyballing a slightly subpar 4th line puts us right back near the top of the league.

But then our D still really isn’t close to the other top teams, by about one elite dman:

Edmonton: 32
Carolina: 29
Vegas: 24
Colorado: 23
Vancouver: 21
Toronto: 4

That one might not be solveable in season. Dubas kind of fucked our D locking into old guys.

Tre has some work to do.

I think there is revisionist history going on re the bolded.

Everyone is happy with Mo, I think.

The Brodie contract has been a huge success overall. Age-related decline was always a risk, but no way of forecasting his father's passing either (unclear which is the bigger factor in his drop off).

Muzzin was a great trade, and a great contract. No one foresaw his career-ending neck injury.

McCabe has been much better this year and is good value for our second pairing.

Lilly is awesome but Keefer won't play him.

Gio is great value for a bottom-pair guy.

Timmins is what Tre wanted Kling to be.

When Tre arrived Muzz was already dead. So the only 'surprise' is the decline of Brodie. But we needed a Muzz replacement before Brodie's decline anyways, now that need is just magnified.

Wasn't the word that his dad passed away and it hit him hard and he didn't get an offseasons worth of work in?
that is also true. I'm just not sure which is more responsible for his decline. Is it age? Or is it the lack of offseason training? Or a combination of the two?

It’s not revisionist. Brodie and Muzzin were good additions, but everyone knew at the time there was a time limit on them.

Brodie was 30 when we signed him. Muzz was 29. We always knew he was going to have to replace them.

McCabe is solid, but not that level of player.

Probably a combination... in an ideal world he gets shut down til playoffs and comes back as a 5/6
