No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Marner’s not giving them a discount no matter when they sign him.

Even if his play doesn’t improve for the rest of this season and Matthews scores 70 goals, Marner & his team will still demand an AAV similar to Matthews on a 4-5 year deal.

That’s why I want them to get Willy locked up, and then I’m comfortable with them letting Mitch walk (since his NMC has kicked in and trading him is no longer an option).

you are??

that would be absolutely disastrous.

unless Mitch wins some Harts or Rockets he ain't gonna be able to ask $13m.

Willy at <$11m, and matching his play, could put a nice hard ceiling on Mitch tbh.

Legitimate comparables around the league didn’t matter to Mitch, Paul & co last time around, and it won’t matter this time either.

Like last time, they will be laser-focused on Mitch getting basically the same deal as Auston, and whether or not it’s deserved isn’t an argument they’ll be willing to entertain.

So, you either pay up or let him hit the open market after next season.

I mean he outscored Matty by 21pts the year before signing so there was an argument.

If they can’t trade him, the right move will probably be to let Marner test the market next offseason and then decide if he wants to leave Toronto for a few extra million or if he wants to stay at a more manageable number.

Mitch and Paul will try to play Treliving like they played Dubas last time. I don’t doubt that some team will offer him $13+ million as a UFA. Just like Pastrnak and Tkachuk and others could have made more on the open market, but they valued their team and their situation more than squeezing out every possible dollar of salary. The Leafs have leverage because of the market, the endorsement opportunities and because Marner is local. Dubas couldn’t make use of that leverage at all, but maybe someone else can.

I'd guess it'll be $12ish. Thats his current contract (13%) on a $90 mill cap.

He won't get more than McDavid/MacKinnon, but he'll get more than Nylander.

You can't let him walk for nothing.

Also $11 for Nylander is 12.5% of next years cap. Pastrnak's contract on next years cap would be $11.9.

12.5% puts him with Seguin, Huberdeau, Gaudreau etc.

Yeah, but Marner has 112 more points in 14 less games.

Best seasons:

Willy - 2023-24 - 1.43*
Marner - 2021-22 - 1.35
Marner - 2022-23 - 1.24
Marner - 2020-21 - 1.22
Marner - 2018-19 - 1.15
Marner - 2019-20 - 1.14
Marner - 2023-24 - 1.09*
Willy - 2022-23 - 1.06

Plus the Selke nomination.

Guys get paid based on the entire thing.

As presto said I would be a bit concerned that his speed is trending in the wrong direction, although I have no idea how accurate that tracking data is. Maybe Tre should take his time.

If his offseason training is just going to be video games and Mountain Dew Code Red every time he has a big life event, he may not age that gracefully.

Ok but a) who you betting in scoring more next year and b) goals > assists and c) nerdies matter and d) mitch gets to play with matthews and has always got more minutes.

Nylander Comps:

Panarin - 14.3% - $12.5 on an $87.5 mill cap - 3.17 P/60 2 years pre-signing
Pasta - 13.6% - $11.9 - 3.87
Huberdeau - 12.7% - $11.11 - 4.11
Seguin - 12.4% - $10.85 - 2.78
Gaudreau - 11.8% - $10.32 - 3.85

Nylander - 3.68

Not including the Florida deals.

Well is the question who will be the better signing, or how much should they get based on their resume?

The answer to the first question is little cloudy based on the 35 games this year. The answer to the second is Marner has earned more money.

If Marner continues the Patrick Kane trajectory (points up the asshole but shit nerdies) well into next season then the conversation will be very different.

Too early for now to know for sure though.

Last 2 years:
Marner: 3.67 p/60, 58.83 xGF%, 60.86 GF%
Nylander: 3.34 p/60, 55.89 xGF%, 52.57 GF%

This year
Nylander: 4.22 p/60, 55.95 xGF%, 47.8 GF%
Marner: 3.04 p/60, 47.67 xGF%, 53.99 GF%

If Marner plays like this for another year and a half then thats bad.

This Year + Last Year:

Mitch: 21:19, 31gl/98pt pace, 53.1xgf%
Willy: 19:04, 41gl/96pt pace, 55.9xgf%

Do you think these paces will change much prior to Mitch signing his new contract?

What are Willy's numbers since he was promoted to PP1?

And you can get into further analysis by looking at their raw numbers and nerdies with/without Matthews and whatnot. I don't know for sure but it does seem like the gap has closed significantly since Willy was used similarly to Marner.

No rush to sign him for me. If he gets his game back, great. It's what I want. And it'll be worth paying him more if he does.
