Not signing him in the summer was a mistake but even worse was panic signing him while he was on an unsustainable heater and a 110+ point pace putting him on Pastrnak level. I think they could have saved 500-750k if they waited till this summer. Worst case they could have given him the exact same contract as he got, but it was never gonna be more. Tre panicked and choked.

This is actually a great UFA class for a team that needs top 4 dmen and has a boat load of cheap forwards to fill out the roster.

Roy, Skjei, Walker, Montour, Tanev, Pesce.

Replace Boosh and Edmundson with Roy and Skjei and they’re back to elite.

I continue to believe that it’s adorably naive to think that you’ll get any discount from Mitch’s camp based on the timing of the signing.

Whether it’s this summer or next spring after a much better season, they’ll squeeze the Leafs for something very similar to what Matthews got and refuse to accept any less.

Well I never said "Discount". I agree he won't. But in a contract year at age 27 next season? I smell career year. Signing him to a fair deal this summer can save you some $. It's like in July Willy wouldn't have given a discount, but would have signed for less than 11.5
Leafs are sitting on the fence too much with these guys since day 1.
