No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

Yep. New additions all looking great. Domi, who he extended, also looking good.

And again, it’s early—but Bertuzzi, who he cut loose instead of paying, has one point in six games to start the year.
Bertuzzi was garbage last year, so I was relieved they let him walk rather than give him some terrible multi-year deal.

And yeah, Domi has looked way better than last year to me, much more like the Dallas playoff stud that I saw in the postseason before we signed him. Looking like a great value play, taking advantage of a situation where the guy just wanted to stay a Leaf.

it's always hard to know how negotiations went behind the scenes and how close they were on what guys. maybe brad was on the verge of makig some mistakes and got saved by some player decisions or higher bids.

it did always look to me tho that we only needed to sign one forward, and that guy should be able to play at least some C. Because all of Knies, Robby, McMann were clearly top-9 material and ditching any of them for nothing would have been really bad. Then there were guys like Krok and Holmberg to give more top-9 depth and then the three prospects beyond that.

Ironically, for all the criticism of it, the minor move of adding Patches may have also given us a nice upgrade on Krok while letting us shed Krok's caphit. Which is a nice piece of bonus work. And yes i know all the criticism was based on the belief that he'd be pushing out a kid like robby and that fear was legit. But I think we'd all have been happy if we were thinking of Patches over Krok in the playoffs.

But saving that money on forwards in order to add two top-4 dmen always seemed like the right strategy. I did think we were going to aim higher at the more expensive UFA D ......but man it sure looks like we got the best value guys. I didn't hate the signings but i did see pretty good potential in both......but they've been much better than even my optimisitic take. I thought OEL would be a very good sheltered bottom pair puck mover with some upside to be a solid complementary 2nd pair guy.......but so far he's looking like minimum a very good 2nd pair guy and now even looking like some 1st pair upside might be realistic. Tanev is kinda what we all thought he'd be but still more on the upper end of what we were expecting at least.

Stolarz or Brossoit was my goalie ask....and it looks like we dodged a bullet with Brossoit needing knee surgery. So yeah everything seems to be turning up Brad.

And hey even Lorentz deserves a shout out. if you're gonna add this type of scrub at least make him legit big, fast, aggressive, good on the PK, and hey the hometown enthuiasm is a nice bonus.

Bertuzzi was probably the most disappointing Leaf to me last year.

With his scoring history & combo of size and physicality, I thought he’d have a monster season playing in our top-6 and would be a real pain in the ass to play against.

Instead, he was mostly a pretty bland, underwhelming player who never clicked with any line we put him on. And just barely managed to claw his way past the 20-goal & 40-point marks before being a dud in the playoffs.

There's only two things stopping Treelover from getting an early A+ on the offseason.

First, the handling of Lilly. This stuff some say about him being unplayable at times last year is ridiculous, and if he did underperform, maybe it was because he was being jerked around by a coach that hated him and was looking for any excuse to keep him out of the lineup. Hard for a kid to play under those circumstances. And yet, they resign him and give him a decent salary bump, only to now sit a $3M young former first rounder dman who certainly would be an upgrade on Timmins at least. But we won't know unless we actually play him, will we? I'm very surprised that Berube is taking the exact same or worse approach with Lilly that fat boy did.

Second, the existence of Reaves on this team. Nuff said.

Oh, and third, get rid of Kampf.

UFA D (minimum $3m on a multi year deal)

SEA Montour (30, $7.1x7): 6gms, 23:49 --> 5v5 18:30 (+4.9dzs%), 65.0xgf% (+10.4rel), 1.35ap/60 --> 5v4 2:55, 0.00ap/60 ----> 4v5 0:04
TOR ELarsson (33, $3.5x4): 6gms, 22:14 --> 5v5 16:37 (+2.8dzs%), 53.6xgf% (+2.4rel), 1.31ap/60 ---> 5v4 3:47, 0.00ap/60 ----> 4v5 1:04
NSH Skjei (30, $7.0x7): 5gms, 21:20 ------> 5v5 16:44 (-12.3dzs%), 34.9xgf% (-12.6rel), 0.00ap/60 --> 5v4 1:19, 0.00ap/60 ----> 4v5 2:27

The two biggest UFA D signings....plus OEL. Montour is off to a great start even in very tough usage, Skjei is off to a very poor one even in sheltered usage. Montour has to be the best performer of all the UFA D.....but OEL is shockingly not far behind him and probably the clearcut 2nd best performing UFA D so far.

WSH Roy (29, $5.8x6): 1gms, 8:39 --------> 5v5 5:59 (+0.0dzs%), 44.2xgf% (-9.5rel), 0.00ap/60 ----------> 5v4 0:00, 0.00ap/60 ----> 4v5 2:40
NJD Pesce (29, $5.5x6): 0gms

These two have been injured.

BOS Zadorov (29, $5.0x6): 6gms, 18:44 --> 5v5 15:23 (-3.2dzs%), 48.5xgf% (+4.4rel), 1.63ap/60 ------> 5v4 0:03, 0.00ap/60 -----> 4v5 2:17
TOR Tanev (35, $4.5x6): 6gms, 18:37 -----> 5v5 13:58 (+1.6dzs%), 62.3xgf% (+9.7rel), 0.00ap/60 -------> 5v4 0:05, 0.00ap/60 ----> 4v5 3:42

The two other legit big contract signings. Zadorov has been decent in middling usage but Tanev has been better in tougher usage. Of the four big "Defensive Dman" signings, Tanev is the best of them so far......buit the two biggest contracts haven't played at all. But that doesn't take away from how good Tanev has been.

LAK Edmundson (31, $3.9x4): 4gms, 20:55 -> 5v5 15:45 (+3.3dzs%), 60.2xgf% (+1.2rel), 0.48ap/60 ----> 5v4 0:05, 0.00ap/60 --> 4v5 4:15
CHI Brodie (34, $3.8x2): 6gms, 16:31 -------> 5v5 15:37 (+8.1dzs%), 55.2xgf% (+3.9rel), 0.32ap/60 ----> 5v4 0:04, 0.00ap/60 --> 4v5 0:40

Brodie who was replaced by Edmundson who was replaced by Tanev. Surprisingly both Brodie and Eddy have been solid in tough usage.

CAR Walker (30, $3.6x5): 4gms, 16:29 -------> 5v5 14:27 (-13.7dzs%), 82.1xgf% (+20.3rel), 0.00ap/60 --------> 5v4 0:09, 0.00ap/60 --> 4v5 1:05
CAR Gostisbehere (31, $3.2x3): 4gms, 18:32 -> 5v5 13:36 (-13.5dzs%), 80.6xgf% (+21.1rel), 1.10ap/60 -------> 5v4 2:59, 10.00ap/60 -> 4v4 0:25

Canes paid big money for a sheltered bottom pairing.......but at least it's a dominant sheltered bottom pairing i guess.

DAL Lyubushkin (30, $3.3x3): 6gms, 18:13 --> 5v5 14:00 (+2.4dzs%), 44.0xgf% (-0.8rel), 0.00ap/60 ------> 5v4 0:02, 0.00ap/60 --> 4v5 3:18
DAL Dumba (30, $3.8x2): 2gms, 12:15 ------> 5v5 10:14 (+9.7dzs%), 40.0xgf% (-5.3rel), 0.00ap/60 ------> 5v4 0:12, 0.00ap/60 --> 4v5 0:45

The mystery of the Dallas Stars' UFA D decisions in a contending year may never be solved.

eh the Bert/Domi combo was pretty excellent at the end of the year thru the playoffs, whether they were with Matthews or Marner.

but bert was definitely not productive enough for most of the year to make up for his poor speed and mediocre overall impact.

Bert and Domi both needed multiple seasons with our group to really get going IMO.

Also Bert may have had more fun playing under Berube. But we'll never know.
