The 47th highest paid forward in the league is a bit of a cautionary tale here. Stamkos signed 4yr x 8 last summer at 34 yrs old and went from putting up 40G/81PT to on pace for 24G/49PTS.
Walk him to free agency. Let someone else make the mistake. This is still a guy with a dreadful playoff track record for us. Easily the worst of the big 4.

Sure, but you have to pay him for what you think he's going to do, not for what he's done. He was already overpaid for what he's done, including this season.
The last time we justified a bunch of overspends because the cap was going up in the future, we hamstrung overselves for 5 years. If we're taking risks, let's do it on guys in their 20's.

What you and ME were repeatedly assured was that there was no way in hell either Tavares or Mitch would waive their NMC’s & be traded before the end of their contracts.
So not sure why you’re trying to take a victory lap on that one.

To be clear, I’m not arguing that he currently wants to leave as a UFA.
And most of the proposals around trading Tavares revolved around making it clear to him the team wanted to move on and salary-dumping him to some shit team (or, at least, a team worse than the Leafs) that was willing to absorb his entire cap hit. Never heard a convincing argument why he’d consent to that instead of taking one last crack at winning here.
Also can’t imagine that the overwhelming majority of parents of young and/or school-aged children wouldn’t invoke trade protection if they have it, rather than suddenly uprooting them to a random destination, or having to live apart for months until the school year is done.
This team isn’t good enough to go all in. Been pretty average with bad coaching overlay. Only way the team goes deep is to get hasek level goaltending and a hot powerplay.
Might as well get a third goalie in the hopes of just riding the hottest one we have going and the best PP guy available.
