- El Mayo is 76 and has been in bad health for a while now
- The Sinaloa cartel split into faction a bunch of years ago (after Chapo got pinched). El Mayo's faction and a faction loyal to Chapo's sons (referred to as Los Chapitos). So, the Sinaloa cartel isn't what it used to be 10 years ago just from the split in the first place
- There's been a nasty turf war going on....well...fucking everywhere up north, but most specifically for El Mayo in Tijuana. The CJNG has been pushing in, and there's still the local Arellano-Felix cartel.
- Maybe coincidentally, one of Chapos sons, Ovidio, was released from custody 2 days ago....but I'm assuming that's Mexican custody.
- El Mayo has always been known as one of the bosses who 'plays by the rules', which is why he's never really been targeted by the mexican feds as much as he should have.

So the early rumours are basically that he felt his rivals getting closer and closer and with his health preferred living out his time in witness protection in the US rather than getting lit up in an old house in the middle of the jungle somewhere.
