OT: American Politics

I don't have the fucking patience. Most videos are filled with so much crap I'm bored within like a minute.

But I know I'm a weirdo. I prefer words. Words are my favourite medium. I'd rather read an article than watch a video, 10 times out of 10.

i mean podcasts are all filler. they suck bigtime.

but youtube is fricken rammed with every single flavor of discussion and analysis and entertainment there is.

need to fix an appliance? youtube's got you.

need an endless groove of interesting niche music? it's on youtube.

need to hear a dead poet recite his best poems? youtube's got it.

need a top actor to recite those poems instead? youtube.

need a quick breakdown of an ancient historical battle? youtube.

need an extensive breakdown of a civilizational revolution? also youtube.

need amateur video of 1950s toronto daily life? youtube.

need genZers realtime reactions to your childhood movies and songs? youtube.

need an infinite loop of nature sounds? youtube.

right I get it being a helpful resource/library.

like, when I needed to change the battery in my car keys, I found a youtube video to show me how. ditto for changing lights in the car.

but I don't need to do those things every day - in fact, I do them quite rarely. so yeah, for those special occasions, great, youtube is fantastic.

but wtf am I gonna do on it on a daily or near daily basis? I mean the itch I would want scratched is news coverage and current events, which again, I get through podcasts currently. (funny enough, my podcast consumption has dropped dramatically post-election, and I feel good about this).

and again, podcasts at least I can have on while I walk the dog or work out or something. cannot do either of those activities and watch youtube videos.

Ya but there’s no porn

who has time to watch all these videos? like I have a hard enough time staying up to date on my podcasts and I multi-task and listen to them all the damn time. cannot multi-task a video effectively though...

They're basically graphic supported podcasts, really. imo most podcasts are long form garbage that could have been an email. 2 hours of attention given for 15-20 minutes of actual content. Most podcasts are chopping up the best parts and putting them on youtube anyway.

want to learn how to cook a dish from 8 different pro chefs? youtube.

want an expert to breakdown the accuracy of scenes from your favorite movies? youtube.

want experts to show and explain to you the best visual effects from those movies? youtube.

Want to see the most legendary or most obscure live performances from your favorite bands or artists, past or present? youtube.

want to learn a musical instrument? youtube.

want to watch that old obscure tv show you loved as a kid? youtube.

want to watch a legendary hockey or soccer game from the 1970s? youtube.

you want to know which type of phone to buy? youtube.

I do zero of those things on a daily basis, is my only point in response.

I do zero of them on a monthly basis.

Which is why I don't understand how people spend hours on youtube on a daily basis. But I already admitted I'm a weirdo who prefers words to pics or vids.

and for the last one, why would I watch a video instead of reading an article? reading the article is almost always more time efficient and dunno that a video is any better... (also funny enough I am planning to get a new phone very shortly but my options are extremely limited because I refuse to get one that is physically bigger than my current iphone 8)

Just taking a quick look at my first ~30 of 200+ subs on youtube

- NatGeo
- Ukraine news
- Background music for doing shit
- US social commentary
- Woodworking
- Former UK intel officer's take on all sorts of shit
- Urbanist
- Moar Ukraine
- US History
- NBA stuff
- Euro urbanism/rail
- Chopped up clips from a comedians podcast
- Science driven weight lifting information
- Photography gear reviews x 3
- Mexico news

Would take every waking hour of every day to cover half of that in podcast form even partially as well. For example, Jimmy Highroller shits all over any NBA podcast going from tremendous height and it's like 20 minutes a week of attention given.

I don't understand how anyone could prefer podcasts to youtube tbh.

especially since all the podcasts are on youtube anyways - and even better, clips from those podcasts that get rid of all the filler.

i mean you're clearly not mentioning the more embarassing ones but hey we all have our guilty pleasures.

but yea, like fucking everything and anything is there.

The only category omission from that shortlist was video game replays of games that I don't play and have no intention of playing that are kind of like late night asmr. Those are my guilty youtube pleasure when I don't want to actually engage my brain in anything. Rust and GTA Online mostly.

Also, other than building a few decks, fuck woodworking. But I can watch live edge furniture be made for 20-30 minutes at a time, no problem.

you're not paying attention!

my time is a limited resource.

I don't have time to dedicate to watching daily youtube videos. period.

I don't have time to dedicate to solely listening to podcasts on a daily basis, either. But when I walk my dog, or cook, or exercise, I can listen to a podcast while I do these things. I do them anyways, so adding a podcast does not further impose on my time.

podcasts are much more functional and practical for people with busy schedules than youtube.

There are also the 6-minute Leaf game highlights. That saves you at least 2 hours right there. YouTube is all I need. I can find everything I want on it. But you have to get premium or the ads will end you.

an honest shot of my current recs page...

yeah i'd watch most all of those.

except that gerry D one which is only there because somebody posted him mocking italians yesterday. then again watching great comedy sets is one of the best things on youtube.

not sure i'd click on that lord of the rings one tho. And the butter chicken one seems clickbaity i'd proabbly look for a better butter chicken vid.

premium also gets you youtubemusic, and then you don't need to spend money on spotify, so it's all good.
