OT: American Politics

The same algorithm that’s a perpetual Nazi machine that drives people to far-right content?

Youtube has gotten pretty good at demonetizing the nazis which drives them off of the platform. It's not the problem it used to be on the platform.

For example, here's well known rapper and better known asshole Joe Budden making fun of right wing manosphere goofballs for getting demonetized on youtube.

mostly because youtube gives you access to so much more than podcasts. also, there's podcast highlights which are better than wasting your time listening to entire podcasts.

I dunno. I can’t think of any podcast I listen to where having some third party comb through it and selectively edit it would be a benefit.

because a huge portion of youtube videos - especially expert-level videos, aren't really specifically made for the visual medium. some are sure. but many aren't, even if they add in some visual content as a bonus. and many don't.

I find that hard to believe. Unless we’re talking about videos where it’s literally just someone talking into the camera, seems to me that at best it’d be the equivalent of listening to the audio of a TV sports broadcast—just wouldn’t fully translate to audio-only when compared to the radio broadcast.

you ever feel the desire to get an Ivy League Philosophy degree for free?

Nope!

No, I mean—what would be the point of listening to a YouTube version of podcast, when I can just use a specific podcast app?

Depends on how many apps you want.

And for YouTube content other than podcasts—why would I want to listen to the audio track of content that was made specifically for a visual medium?

Because most of it doesn't require the visuals to be good. But because of the format, the creators are incentivized to make shit concise. ~20 minutes is the sweetspot to maximize revenue for them so the good content creators (and there's 1000's of them) have gotten really good at getting their point across in 20 minutes or so unless if they specialize in longer form stuff. Podcasts tend to be a bunch of people just rambling about shit for 2-3 hours. Youtube videos are the the same people, or people in similar fields and of similar expertise actually putting effort into making the content concise, accurate, and easily searchable.

Back when I used to listen to podcasts it was basically hardcore history and Sam Harris. Sam lost part of his functioning mind and all of his friends ended up being right wing grifters, but Dan Carlin posts all of his stuff on youtube thankfully if you're looking for a good history podcast.

Hardcore History is great. I just wish Dan could be bothered to make more than one episode per year.

You are concise!

AND devilishly handsome.

When I hear the word podcast i think interview / convo / Q&A type format which isn't really my thing.

But if podcast means lecture / explainer type format then sure.

Yeah, that wouldn’t interest me either.

The podcasts I listen to most are typically narrative history. Either just being presented by one person to the “audience”, or to a co-host/guest.

But that's the beauty of the evergreen content on the platform. Dan has about 90 hours of hardcore history on his youtube channel, and there's a bag of good history youtubers to add to the pile if that's your jam.

I’ve already listened to every Hardcore History episode. Unless he’s posting YouTube exclusive episodes, there wouldn’t be any new content there for me.

And again—maybe there are great history YouTubers, but I’m not interested in sitting down and watching their videos. If they write a book or start a podcast, I’ll check it out!

The longer format of podcasts isn’t really a negative for me. Considering most of my listening is done during the several hours of commuting I do per week, or any time I spend doing regular cleaning/housework or renovations.

I don’t know how podcast apps work really but i guess an advantage of youtube is the algo is very good at finding relevant related content.

Most of my history and history adjacent subs:

A bunch of the history guys do 40-60 minute content. A few of them are "podcasts" already. Just with visuals thrown on for the sake of the youtube audience.

Unless you're a person without any interests, it seems crazy to me to dismiss YouTube like this. It's literally a gold mine of content for any person on virtually any topic, all for free.

And I dig podcasts, too.

But the beauty of YouTube is that there are videos of all lengths providing whatever level of depth you need. For example, if you're thinking about WW1, what was the exact sequence of events, you can find a 5-minute quick summary. Or an 8 min slightly deeper summary. Or a half-hour overview. Or a 90 minute documentary. Or a 10-episode mini-series.

And then go down any rabbit hole that interests you, like a 20-minute video telling the story of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Of course, you can always just read his Wikipedia page, but most topics are a lot more interesting with visuals.

Let's be honest, but the written word is becoming a rare "luxury". These kids nowadays have all these cool tools to be visual storytellers on the cheap, and they are fucking awesome at it.
