OT: American Politics

Yeah, I don't think the average Canadian understands how different and difficult things are for middle class (and lower) Americans. They just know they don't like what's going on here and don't grasp that things can infact be worse.
Significantly less waiting times for seeking medical assistance.....that is if you have the money/insured.

Oh, you'll still be able to see a hospital but it wouldn't be staffed by guys like Dr. Gregory House but guys like:

There is nowhere in the developed world better to live than the United States if you have money. I don't mean "I make 150K a year" money, those people are a medical condition away from ruin like everyone else. I mean actual money.

But there's nowhere worse to live in the developed world if you don't. High violent crime rates, worse health outcomes, worse social/financial mobility, more car dependent, etc.

But nowhere is it easier to achieve a thin veneer of financial success than it is in the US though, so it appears really attractive to people caught up in status chasing.

I'm reflecting on that comment by Count and I think I'm actually most surprised that he would choose to travel to Nashville of all places.

doesn't seem to fit his internet persona. but I guess what do I know

"Given this situation, it is beyond tragic that America is about to return to “governance” by an individual dedicated to plunder and extractive capitalism in all its forms and whose first administration stood out for its hostility to climate change mitigation. From America's withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, to purges of the Environmental Protection Agency, to over 100 rollbacks of rules regarding clean air and water, toxic chemicals, and wildlife, seemingly no area of environmental concern escaped Donald Trump’s deregulatory mania.

His administration removed protections from more than half the nation's wetlands, and the Department of the Interior abolished restrictions that prevented more lands from being available for oil and gas leasing. This left Trump’s backers in the auto, agribusiness, chemical, and fossil fuel industries freer to pollute the earth and plunder natural resources with impunity.

Oil and gas companies no longer had to report methane emissions. Mines no longer had to prove they can pay to clean up future pollution. And after almost 40 years of bans on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, Trump ordered several lease sales to accommodate his cronies in the oil and gas sector."
