OT: American Politics

Americans also have a low tolerance for their soldiers coming home from foreign occupations in body bags. So it’d be important for any Canadian insurgency to produce a plentiful supply of those as well.
They used it. Don't think they care about anything outside of themselves anymore

Well don't expect CNN to show any body bags on screen. Even of it isnt censored by MAGA, the media mogul have already capitulated and will self censor. It'll be a bigger whitewash than Vietnam.

If we get annexed and the government institutes a compulsory draft, will Count still try to fly his kid to South America or will he enlist in the Quisling Regiment?

You're not wrong, but imo that's a difficult approach to take with the US military. It was difficult in Iraq and Afghanistan and more difficult now in the era of high end drones and hellfire missiles. It's probably the best way for a lot of civilian casualties to happen whereas they're unlikely to put much effort into protecting quislings.

If we do get to the point where Canada is under a US military occupation and is forcibly annexed, unfortunately you’re never getting the Americans out without a lot of innocent Canadian civilian casualties and collateral damage to property & infrastructure along the way.

Best to either make peace with that, flee the country or make peace with being a subject of Emperor Trump.

Or join Les Maquis. We can listen for instructions from the Canadian government in exile on the BBC World Service.

18 months ago this would have been pretty catastrophic, but I think there's a combination of factors that make this less impactful than it would have been. Obviously the more military aid the better, but the US military aid was always more impressive on paper than it was in the field (something I've gone into a few times over the last few years). By the beginning of 2024, total European aid has far outpaced total American aid and as long as Europe is willing to fund arms purchases, Ukraine can still outlast Russia. Ukrainian domestic arms manufacturing has closed a lot of equipment gaps that exists in 2022-23 and their claimed 200K drone deliveries per month will eventually overwhelm Russian air defences and bring their energy industry to a halt.

Trump can, and will say whatever he wants, but the idea that the US has the ability to give away Ukrainian territory in a deal with Russia is dumb, even for him. The Ukies just won't listen to it, and they'll keep grinding the Russian economy into a fine paste.

At this point, NATO membership really isn't worth much, so meh. Ukraine getting fast tracked into the EU (which has a military defence clause) with other individual military alliances with France, Germany, UK, Poland, Finland, Sweden, etc would do just fine.

There's a path to the return of 2021 borders, and even a path to the return of 2014 borders, but they're long, expensive, and bloody. Getting fast tracked into the EU is probably enough of a win at this point. I know there's legitimate concern about Russia using it as an opportunity to lick their wounds and re arm, but they're not going to catch any of their adversaries unaware going forward.
