So here's my guess as to what's next

They're going to float the idea of starting a "patriots militia" or some such bullshit, and go after 2A for anyone not part of an authorized militia. It will get challenged, it will go to SCOTUS, and SCOTUS will change their intrepretation of 2A to state that the right to bear arms is only guaranteed if you're part of a "well regulated militia", and the Trump militias will of course be the only militias that qualify.

They're not going to go after guns, they're going to go after liberals guns.

I don't see what putting Patel in charge of both departments would be for otherwise.
