OT: American Politics

We really have no perception of how difficult life was 2 generations back.

3 of my great grandmothers got on cargo ships when they were ~ 10 years old, alone or with a similarly aged sibling, to move to a foreign county without their parents and no money in their pocket. The brother of one of those great grandmothers died on the ship. Another one got separated from her sibling at the port.

diseases we’ve since eradicated menaced society.

Trade wars led to hot wars in the late 1800s that set the stage for wwi.

pandemics lasted 10 years.

But yeah let’s hearken back to the 1880s and repeal vax mandates. So dumb.
Amazing that we are here.

I think about this a lot. We must do more to appreciate the golden era of peace, health and equity most of us have experienced. It's been built on progressive, democratic institutions. Let us hope.

People got too comfortable.

In my lifetime the only two big things to happen were 9/11 which had zero impact on me and covid. No war, no recession.

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of seeing footage of Vietnam on TV when my parents watched the news. My mother was adamant that I not go near any mail boxes lest an FLQ bomb be in one of them.

The 2008 recession was really bad and could have been disastrous (but not so much in Canada.) Luckily the Fed handled it fairly well. However, the astroturf Tea Baggers, the direct antecedents of MAGA, embarked on a moralizing conniption and demonstrated their disdain/cluelessness about the economy.

It was the same with COVID. These screaming Dunning-Kruger monkeys had no clue the extent to which the experts, who they violently loathed, saved their ignorant asses.

and still don't.

Maybe I read that wrong, but isn't he basically saying that Gretzky is nice to him but taking a lot of shit right now even though he told Trump that Canada is its own country, so he's throwing him a bone and basically saying leave him alone?

"he wants to make me happy and is therefore somewhat "low-key" about Canada remaining a separate country"

"He supports Canada the way it is, as he should"
