OT: American Politics

Yeah, I think the only uncertain thing is whether this judge wants to be a martyr (in which case he’ll hold them in contempt and won’t last long after that) or whether he backs down out of fear.

what will holding them in contempt accomplish? they'll just ignore it.

Same as forcing a closure of the government. Even symbolic resistence is useful. Force them to do illegal shit every step of the way, act like the system matters, do your best to defend institutions.

If you haven't read On Tyranny yet, you need to mate. Let me know if you need a copy of it.

people won't do shit until it hits them in real life unfortunately.

Agreed, but there are entire groups of people who have lived upholding various institutions. There job right now is to do their best to defend those institutions, delay the loss of those institutions, etc. Time is the enemy of authoritarianism when it's setting in. We never know what the tipping point is going to be for resistence to pick up, so dragging each and every piece of this out as long as is possible is essential to having as much of the system intact as possible when real resistence shows up. Which will matter if it does show up.

and if it never does, well at least some people will be able to look themselves in the mirror.

This is the beginning of the constitutional crisis
You cant have a crisis when most of the country doesn't know what that actually is and then shrug when it's explained to them. People are so civilly and politically illiterate that they don't even know why something that's happening is important.

At least when Watergate happened, most American citizens had a basic understanding of how government works and why what Nixon nd his minions did was important and a threat to democracy. Today, nobody knows and even fewer care. They won't know what they had until it's gone and then it will be too late.

We need to be guillotining these traitors now, because a year from now they'll be untouchable.
