OT: American Politics

This part of your timeline is incorrect, at least according to Carney’s public statements (including his speech & press conference yesterday).

What has happened instead is that although Carney’s ministers have maintained contact with their American counterparts in Trump’s cabinet, since Carney became PM, Trump and his team have made no effort to reach out to Carney and Carney and his team have made no effort to reach out to Trump.

Where that changed was yesterday, when Trump’s team reached out to Carney’s team to schedule a call between the two. Carney’s accepted, though at least as of the time of his speech yesterday, the exact time for that call was TBA, though Carney expected it to take place in the next day or two.

You are correct in the end state of where we are at 10:30 AM on Friday. My timeline was based on a presumption of events leading to the truth social post at 1:30 AM on Thursday.

Did his post force our Prime Minister to take his call finally? Don’t know, but it sure seems like it given the tariffs which were announced on Wednesday.

Carney can play tough all he wants but at the end of the day we’re still beholden to this buffoon and his stupid ass tactics. We are a decade away from independence from that moronic country, which may not be around then.

Again though, I don’t think the way you’ve framed this is accurate.

“Was finally forced to take his call” implies that Trump has been trying to speak to Carney and Carney has actively been refusing to take his calls up until now.

Nothing that has been said from either the Canadian or American sides backs that up. Every indication is that when Trump’s team reached out this week to schedule a call, that was the first time since Trudeau was still our PM that either side has made any attempt to engage in direct PM-to-President level talks.

Also worth keeping in mind that the ball has been in Trump’s court all along here. The very longstanding standard convention in international diplomacy is that when a new head of government takes power, the onus is on other countries to reach out to them. Carney being the one to reach out instead, especially in light of the threats to our sovereignty, would have been a weak-ass, submissive move.
