OT: American Politics

Do you go out with someone you find unattractive because she’s less unattractive than her neighbor?

I’ve explained this, I don’t believe the Democrats. They’re liars and the ones that aren’t are incompetent.
Don't believe what?

I'm talking about the gop falling into boot-step with Trump, a man they hate and who does NOT stand with their beliefs, just to keep power.
That's selling your soul.

They sold that long ago. It's a matter of political survival, it's either Trump or nothing right now so they are backing Trump, even though I am sure many don't want to. Both parties are in lock-step right now.

As for believe what, pretty much anything that comes out of the Dem leadership's mouths. It amazes me that people think the Dems aren't lying sacks.

I just realized how much easier threads are to read with Beleafer on ignore.

Thanks habsy, its actually ignore now with no hint of the ignored person having ever made a post.

Jerry Nadler, 1998:

There must never be a narrowly voted impeachment or an impeachment substantially supported by one of our major political parties and largely opposed by the other. Such an impeachment would lack legitimacy, would produce divisiveness and bitterness in our politics for years to come. And will call into question the very legitimacy of our political institutions.

They know what they're doing.

I'm surprised I'm not on that list.

I don't have anyone on ignore, I have the ability to skip over posts if need be although I do understand the ease of not having to do so.

He didnt expect that one side simply would let their guy do this.
They know what they're doing.

Pelosi, earlier this year ...
“I do think that we want to be unified and bring people together. Impeachment is a very divisive approach to take ...”

Do you know how many times that Nadler quote has been aired, posted, quoted in articles etc?

Where have you been?

I go long stretches without reading this thread and mostly avoid direct consumption corporate TV (insofar as it is possible). So, saw it for the first time this morning.

Also, think it's particularly relevant as the impeachment process has done precisely that -- further entrenched partisan division.

The underlying issues do not affect the material wellbeing of working-class Americans in any noticeable way, and not many people are emotionally invested in protecting the reputations of Joe and Hunter Biden. Every moment spent discussing impeachment is a moment not spent discussing healthcare, educational inequity, the black-white wealth gap, the sprawling prison system, the surveillance state, the opioid epidemic, the hollowing out of industrial towns, and the country’s appalling treatment of immigrants. The easy reply is that it’s possible to “do both”, but time and energy are zero-sum: you have to pick and choose what you focus on. Trump would probably love a 2020 election cycle dominated by the impeachment issue, because it relieves him from having to defend his appalling record.

This rhetoric is not only transparently disingenuous but also dangerous. By the Democrats’ own logic, President Obama is guilty of a far worse offense than his newly impeached successor. Whereas Trump briefly paused military funding that was ultimately delivered to Ukraine, Obama refused to send that same military funding at all. This was, in my view, a welcome decision: In resisting Beltway pressure, Obama avoided further inflaming a deadly proxy war.

There might be a silver lining in all of this impeachment stuff. Dem supporters might start to see the party's leadership for what it is. It's not big movement but there's definitely a chunk of people who have been turned off this impeachment as it has moved along.

From CNN/SsRS poll released this week ...

Should Trump be impeached and removed from office

Yes

Oct 17-20: 50%
November 21-24: 50%
December: 12-15: 45%

Dem only, yes

November 21-24: 90%
December: 12-15: 77%

The impeachment hearings have had the exact opposite effect that many establishment dem supporters thought: support for impeachment has weakened and particularly among dems. Further, opposition has strengthened among pubs.
