OT: American Politics

Really been tuned out.

Are you saying they've already done so?
there was a draft judgment, written in February, that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

as far as I know it is still a draft but honestly I think they wanted to wait until after the mid-terms to release the decision.

so Roe v. Wade still stands, but it is functionally on death row.

Yep. I mean the Court could always, and has, reversed decisions that were incorrectly decided. Although in the past that has typically been to expand rights, not shrink them. But the process here is crazy. You can strategically use the Supreme Court to attack constitutional rights based on ideology, rather than the law itself. Talk about undermining the integrity of the court. It means nothing now.

its why i have a hard time getting worked up about this - as soon as she went into the hospital that last time I knew this was the result.

This feels kinda icky to me, honestly.
Doyou mean my post criticizing her decision?

Hopefully, it didn't come off anything other than criticizing a supreme Court judge.

We were railing against the latest judge to step aside on time as well.

RBG was an accomplished person. She inspired many. However, it's hard to characterize her decision at the end anything other than selfish at best, narcissistic at worst.

She isn't the cause of this all. That falls on the right for pursuing fascism, then on the left for working for corporations rather than the people, then the to 1% for pursuing greed rather than universal well being their money could accomplish, then the people who stayed silence when the writing was on the wall and made excuses for these parties.....then after a few more groups it comes to RBGs decision.

This is not her legacy but certainly should be part of it. Thanks to her decision, we will have thirty years of right wing court.

The day after the most devastating news for women's rights in like 50 years and the huge long list of people that had a hand in it, everyone's blaming... the dead lady who fought for women's rights her whole damn life. Yeah, sounds right.

Ok I see where you are coming from and I definitely see why my criticism would come off as the way you described it (i.e her years of activism. The fact that she has passed I don't really care about)

My thought was that it was a selfish decision which helped undo decades of work. That has to be part of the conversation. It was an absolutely unnecessary decision she made ; and one that she should have known the consequences of.

Listen we all know who are the main reason for this travesty. And RBG certainly isn't anywhere near the top of the list. But other justices need to take note.
