OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Ford earns this attention. He's just that comical conservative that works like he is a chip on his shoulder, he's arrogant, and then he becomes a drama queen when its clear he's doing things that the public disagrees with.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I love how some of you have completely lost the big picture.

nope. you just never saw the 'big picture'.

he was doing his job. it was a hack piece. i don't think anybody disagrees. but he was doing his job. he did not break any laws.

the only issue is the outsized reaction by the mayor.

He could of done this during the daytime.

*could have

and he did at 730-8. still light out.

He could of asked and Ford or made Ford aware that he is going to be in the area and looking at the land.

*could have

not sure what good it would have done, though. 'asking' was unnecessary. making aware almost certainly would have provoked a confrontation.

He could of brought crew and made it it public so no one could mistaken who and what they were.

*could have

resources are finite. why would you need to come with an entire crew, anyways?

But all of this is lost to those who suck up and spew the tripe about the big bad Conservative Ford and the poor little reporter doing his job. If the Sun did this to His Blondness, you would be creaming yourselves with indignation.

stop turning this into a political issue.

nobody cares about ford's politics. it's a style issue, not a substance one.

Laughable.

indeed, your need to constantly turn things into political issues IS laughable.

i look forward to your one sentence dismissal of my post.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

And really, I'm tired of people acting like people chose Ford because they liked him. Toronto elected him because the competition was so unfathomably bad it's the only possibly way in which he ever would have gotten elected.

You had a borderline criminal who abused billions in taxpayer's dollars and a mafioso who couldn't even speak English and was deep in bed with the unions.

It's not shocking that Ford got elected.

I don't think Ford is arrogant at all actually. He's definitely the opposite of arrogant when compared with some of the radical leftists and socialists on council that think they have every right to abuse tax dollars like Michael Layton.

Ford gets respect because he treats the citizens and taxpayers with respect for the most part, he returns calls, and doesn't act like he's better than everyone else. That's ridiculously rare for a politician regardless of how you feel about his ideological leanings.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Stalking the guy at his house repeatedly is kind of obvious.

Repeatedly? Dale wasn't stalking him, he was researching a story. Whether or not you think it's a legitimate story, he was doing his job.

Mary Walshe is not a Star reporter. I don't know of any other incidents where he has been stalked at his house. The Walshe one is the only one I can think of, and that was CBC

Like when he flipped a woman the bird for having the audacity to be upset with him breaking the distracted driving laws?

Although, I will say he does deserve some credit for returning calls and getting out and about. However, you have to question if he does it to a point where he doesn't have the appropriate time for managing the city and its affairs.

EVERY ONE of your excuses is justifying gutter reporting. Instead of condemning it, you excuse it.

The fact that you are not condemning trash reporting has more to do with YOUR politics as much as it has to do with mine. And it definitily has EVERYTHIGN to do with the Stars politics.

How is investigating the Mayor's house doing his job? What possible reason other than antagonizing Ford could The Star have to send someone out there on a non-story?

Listen, I understand that Ford's temper and rush to judgement does him no favours, and it comes across as belligerent and childish a lot of the time, but the media bears a significant amount of the blame.

You utterly fail to see that the way he "did his job" is same trashy way toilet news rags do.

I've had to deal with reporters in my old company because I was the first one to hire Sri Lankan off the boat. It wasn't anything like this. Sure, they were pushy and insistent, but they didn't skulk around.

Why not? Ford is a fat, annoying conservative who does not tow the urban left line and needs to be cornered and vilified. ANYTHING done in the name of social justice is righteous.

Just total bush league stuff from a paper that went from being a nationally-respected (decades ago) publication to nothing better than a tabloid. Just amateur journalism.

It's no better than The Sun.

The Conservative govt. tried to change laws so that news coverage didn't have to be fact based. Give your head a shake.
There is someone out there fighting for independent, fact-based,journalism, and it isn't any conservative.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

The funny thing in this is that the fence between Ford's house and the property is a 4' chain-link fence with some sparse shrub growth...ie, unless the reporter is 5'2", he wouldn't need cinder blocks to look into Ford's property, and any pictures he took in the direction of the property limits would appear to be at Ford's property.

The reason this blew up is that property requests like this are not the norm for the TRCA, and I'm guessing the reporter was just trying to figure out for himself what was so special about the property. Typically TRCA deals with minor encroachments where someone over-built their home improvements, and 99% of the time the answer is "No, you can't buy that...it's park/public property.". Still, considering everyone and their mother know's Ford temperament, the reporter is kinda dumb for not making his presence known in the first place.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Newspapers have been satirizing political figures and events for hundreds of years my friend. Rob Ford is a public figure, if he can't handle the press maybe he shouldn't be mayor. Instead of trying to purchase park land (which is rarely allowed) he should move somewhere else like everyone else who wants added security has to do.

you need to spend less time building straw men and more time thinking for yourself rather than what your fellow ideologues tell you.

Again, this is one incident. You've previously referred to others, "repeatedly stalking" I believe were your words.

And this wasn't stalking. The mayor made an application to buy land from the TRCA, this is abnormal (as per the TRCA). The Toronto Star was writing a story about the mayor's attempt to purchase public land. As that is land that is collectively owned by all the citizens of Toronto, it's not a stretch to say it's an issue of public interest (even though I'm already on record saying I think it's a nothing story, it's still a legitimate news story). Before writing about the parcel of land in question, Daniel Dale wanted an idea of what it looked like, what was on it, etc. and the current fencing around the mayor's backyard. He asked for photos from the TRCA, they could not get them to him before his deadline. So, being a diligent reporter, he went to investigate firsthand.

None of this should be a big deal. It was a reporter following up his story. It happened to take him to public land adjacent to the mayor's house. The story was made when the mayor confronted him, allegedly forcing him to drop his blackberry and recorder while having him cornered with his fist cocked.
