OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

So hard to process information in times where the world's brilliant minds are firing off data at an unprecedented rate. But some important findings here from a genius.

Fyi this is the best evidence I've seen yet that this could be a milder form of illness. Doesn't change much in terms of the threat to our hospitals but this has to give folks some real hope.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted in this thread. But im seeing a bunch of Ford hate. And idgaf one way or the other but what can he do? What would you do different? Every country is getting fucked. You guys think it’d be any better/different under Wynn or Horwath?

These guys are all fucked. No doing right in my eyes.

Make the decisions we all know he's eventually going to be forced into making in three weeks when it's obvious to everyone and when the modeling already tells us where it's heading.

It's happened for the last two years.

Well I don't think anyone here is pining for wynn or Horwath. We can't say 'oh they would have been bad too so there's no point in holding the premier to a high standard." I don't care what they would have done because they are not in power. I'd be screaming at them too if they were in power and were as bad as ford. It's not really about political affiliation for me when it comes to science. Biden, the democrat, ignores science aggressively and I've been extremely critical of him too. If you're bad you're bad. I don't say "hey at least he was better than trump!" That's not good enough.

A lot of politicians have really sucked tbh. I think Doug did fairly okay early on and actually gave him some credit (after his "have fun on march break!" thing) but politicians in general have tended to drag their heels and avoid making hard decisions until they see the modelling actually start to come to fruition.

Conservative politicians have tended to be worse - likely because they're trying to keep too many people happy.

The simplest explanation is this:

Each step along the way the data has been in and clear for weeks before Dougie made the decision to bring in any restrictions. When you're dealing with exponential/epidemic growth patterns every day of inaction makes the wave ultimately longer and higher, which can lead to 100's-1000's of additional cases that simply would not have occurred if sensible social restrictions (which absolutely work, there's simply no counter argument against them) had been put in place at the point the data was clear. We're not talking about locking everything the fuck down every time someone coughs, but when virus reproduction numbers increase, what comes next is nearly as clear and obvious a law of nature as any other (sit on a tack and bleed from the ass, fall out of a tree and hit the ground, whatev). When reproduction numbers go above 1.0, it's time to pull back the reigns a bit. Restrict indoor gatherings (there's no reason for the ACC to have been full at any time since ~Dec 1), cut max capacity of indoor retail/shopping, set up tax reimbursement programs for any business in the province to install approved air moving/hepa systems, etc, etc. We still to this day have places of work (schools, LCBO, etc) that won't allow their employees to wear N95 masks and force them to wear provided surgical masks due to provincial mandates that fly in the face of the established science on covid.

There's a pile of things they could have been doing (why do I feel like I write a similar post 2 weeks into every fucking wave?) and choose not to because I dunno, it costs money, would require him to actually care, etc.

So yeah, Dougie does some of the right things, but too late for them to have the positive effect that they could of. A good analogy is the brake pedal in your car. When you see someone running a red light, you don't wait to see if everything is going to sort itself out before hitting the brakes, you get on the brakes early because the earlier you do it, the better your chance of limiting damage is. Even if the accident is unavoidable, the more speed you scrub before impact will lessen the severity. The exact same principle applies here. The quicker we're able to stall reproductive growth in any way, the smaller the overall impact it will have on society.

I don’t think they as individuals have the decision making power to make those types of decisions. Too many hands in the pot. It’s all bullshit. The politics at play are a problem but this isn’t just a Canada thing. The world is getting fucked.

Would a world wide lockdown stop this? More vaccines? Faster vaccines? How are you getting them into the arms of people in foreign countries? Are you stopping those people from leaving their countries? Are you counting on other countries to do the same?

I’m so tired of all this.

The move was a coordinated global lockdown back in Jan/Feb 2020 if there was any hope of elimination. Too late now of course.

And yes nerds did advocate for that at the time

And things really are in a no-win scenario. Like, nobody wants more lockdowns, or to "cancel Christmas" or whatever. Everyone is tired of it all. Part of the issue this time around is Canada never seemed to get down to be able to "enjoy" time after the last wave. Like June and July were fairly low on case numbers, and things felt a little more normal then. But then you have the August/September spike, but things never got down to the lows after that, since it led straight into this latest surge. So basically the whole fall has been a mess since things never got down to a normal, stable level.

And then compounding it with the holidays, where the case numbers aren't so bad that people wanted to get back to things after "skipping" Christmas last year, but then again, since things are trending up, you don't know what you should or shouldn't want to do.

It’s brutal because for 1 smart person there is likely 50 morons. How are you going to remain in power by listening to the 1 smart person while upsetting the 50 morons?

I’m not happy with any of our politicians and give no fucks about what they say or do because none of it makes any difference. They all fall victim to trying to make everyone happy. Someone out there is always getting fucked.

My greatest frustration has been half measures.

He'll sorta do a thing. But go half way. When it doesn't work (obviously), he'll change it. People get even more frustrated at the constant changes.

Like I know no one wants to do this but we know eventually we'll have to go to no fans at Leaf games, don't we? It's staring us in the face. Quebec (has its own deficiencies) ripped the bandaid off.

It’s all bullshit.

They closed the border to Africa. Now they’re calling it racist.

2 years ago Trudeau didn’t close the border to China because “we aren’t racist”. Trump closed the border and was quickly called racist.

How do you stop the spread of this shit without hurting someone’s fucking feelings? How do you stay in power to make that decision when there are so many differing opinions and beliefs?

No win territory for anyone. All bullshit.

I dunno about racist, but imo pointless to close the border to something already here and doubling every three days.
