OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Ottawa’s public health officer has warned that there will be no new or very few vaccine appointment available when everyone over 18 yrs old become eligible for their third dose on Monday. Seemingly it’s not so much supply but lack of people to give them.

Also, there has been some discussion that PCR test may have to be limited to health workers and those most at risk because of overwhelmed testing capacity in Ottawa.

If only we had people paid to manage this kind of stuff that were given massive piles of public money to manage this stuff.

If...if we had those things, I could not possibly see any of what you mentioned ever happening.

5 days into a friends hockey team outbreak… all vaxxed x2, multiple positives, nobody exhibiting more than mild (dictionary sense, not “not hospitalized” mild). Anecdotal and there’s time for more positives / symptoms to worsen, but some promising news.

I think we need to rethink the pcr test thing. If this is endemic and we’re prone to wildfire peaks, it doesn’t really make a ton of sense. Especially with the ability to test for infectiousness at home.

Just heard about 2 friends testing positive too with rapid tests. Went to a bar a few nights ago. Early but similar mild symptoms, in their 30s, healthy and athletic. One texted me and said it feels like something between a cold and a flu but still unlike either because of weird random symptoms. His biggest complaint? Excessively sweaty feet.

I know this guy maybe misrepresents things a bit but looks like SA is getting off light. It'll be worse for us because 'reasons' but there has to be some value in this data.

The only difficult part is that Ontario, Denmark, UK etc either have or will GREATLY exceed their daily peak in cases. South Africa seemed to have peaked before the delta peak so you've got less overall cases with other factors playing a part too like survivor bias and immunity.

This Omicron wave in South Africa was their first wave with widespread immunity from vaccines and prior infection (some estimates have them at 80% infected and they've got around 30% vax coverage) so the difference between the delta and omicron waves looks a lot like the difference between UKs alpha and delta wave. Delta was more a severe variant but the vaccines made it look more mild as it blunted the delta wave significantly. With South Africa prior immunity definitely played a big part in decreasing severity; most likely the biggest part. Question is how much. And it's a very fair question because the data is striking and some of the features of the variant could be promising clues.

I do love that guy tho. His aggressive opinions are a red flag but the data does look promising. Either way, even if it's mainly from prior immunity, it's a good sign that this thing can become milder upon frequent exposure.

Dubas:

"Given what is known so far about the omnicon variant. I am hopeful that the early data is great. Its more transmissible which is not great, but I'm hopeful that it creates less illness, less hospitalization and death as it looks."

Jock nerds > nerd nerds

So clearly a milder wave so far but hospitalization and mortality rate still greatly exceeding the flu. May never get it below flu severity but a man can dream. Problem for hospitalis is the transmissibility obviously. Even at flu severity it's an issue with this many infections.

UK still showing no signs of replicating South Africa. Their delta wave was significantly milder than alpha because of vaccines so it may not be realistic to get much milder than that.

Antiviral pills are the game charger we're looking for to get severity to "flu" levels.

A total covid strategy isn't as far off as we think.

-behavioral shifts the limit time relatively useless and crowded indoor spaces
-N95s in public
-vaccines
-rapid tests available for free, easy to get, with clear public health education campaigns on how and when to use them
- streamlined prescription system for antivirals. None of this bullshit about waiting for a doctors appointment.
- contactless delivery or pickup method for antivirals, all of it covered 100% by ohip

this sounds perfect but... also hoping DoFo's gov't will pull this off this level of organization or foresight seems like a total fantasy.
