After doing some research I legitimately think that social distancing + mandatory masks could absolutely decimate this virus. Even homemade masks are relatively effective. Anything helps.

Yeah. The WHO is a joke at this point. They're worried that non medical people like us cannot learn how to properly use a mask.

people are making their own cotton masks; obviously not 95% effective like N95, but 70% is better than 0%

Any "dust" mask intended for construction that is N95 rated if you can find them at a home depot or similar.

I've also seen KF94 rated masks online, which is an asian "quarantine" mask that is roughly as effective as N95 for this purpose. They would be getting shipped from asia though, so there's some delay there. I was going to order a box of those but wasn't in love with the shipping times (19-21 days was what I was quoted)

If you feel a mask is necessary a surgical mask is perfectly adequate for the general population. If you are following public health requests to stay home you don’t need a mask.
