OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

It's really sad that not believing in science has become a political thing. All because they despise "libs." Purely a result of their incredible rage. The science isn't even that complicated. We all learned about it in school! But many libs believe it so it must be bad.

Or maybe the beleafer's are just really dumb and don't understand vaccines and their incredible obvious safety profile. But he's too narcissistic to be educated so it's a lost cause.

“We test anybody who’s admitted to the hospital for whatever reason to see whether or not they have Covid, and we’re definitely seeing an increase in cases. However, we’re really not seeing an increase in children who are hospitalized for Covid or in the intensive care unit for Covid," Offit said.

Geez. 8th paragraph, just a little misleading.

Kids admissions are higher than ever in multiple locations in admissons for covid and not just with covid. But you'd sort of expect that with case numbers this high. In the UK the CHR for kids hasn't changed compared to prior waves (for admissions FOR covid). So the sheer raw number is higher but there's no evidence that the proportions are higher too.

Emily Oster is controversial with a lot of parents as she has a "covid minimizer" reputation but I don't think I've ever read any of her covid takes prior to this article. Mrs. Preston read a lot of her pre-covid stuff and she seems like a smart gal.

Anyway.. For the parents with young children, this is a nice article that helps conceptualize the risks. Obviously more unknowns with covid than the other stuff so don't take it at face value but it should make parents feel better:

South Africa showing that any plateau will likely be lengthy as many of the infections later in the wave go to the older folks

Still a nice reduction in severity with this wave tho. They had the luxury of having their peak in cases only slightly higher than their Delta peak. Canada, UK, Denmark, etc. won't have that luxury. Hopefully we get through it.

Coworkers having a huge discussion today in the group chat about how there should be no quarantine for anyone at all anymore because it's just a cold.

Is that, like, a common opinion at this point? Feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.

What should be a celebration of how well vaccines work has turned into mass minimization of a very dangerous and transmissible disease that is still crowding hospitals around the world. A lot of it is the psychology of people believing what they WANT to believe because they are tired and want their lives back. Understandable! We are just not there yet, even if you believe we're closer.. We're just not. Ask anyone who works in a hospital and they'll tell you the same. Omicron isn't a walk in the park and the concern is that the next variant gets back to Delta-level pathogenicity, or worse.

So while a lot of folks are celebrating the end of the pandemic I think it's worth being conscious that the mutating and new variants are likely going to continue for eternity and it's all random and doesn't have to continue getting milder.
