OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

It's at this point I'd like to point out that an epic amount of time, money, and energy goes into regulating and managing the negative safety impacts automobiles have on our lives.

Huge amount of money and effort has gone into engineering the vehicles themselves, enforcement of regulations, the design and construction of roadways, etc.

It never fails that when someone tries to show covid's impact next to things we "don't do anything about" that they're entirely and hilariously wrong about how little has actually gone into minimizing the negative impacts of those things they compare covid to.
i always liked the car comparison

car safety (air bags, seat belts, bumpers, etc) are like vaccines - protect ourselves and somewhat others
road rules (stop signs, speed limits, etc) are like restrictions

shit even sometimes roads are closed due to safety concerns (mostly snow, ice)

Their biggest star is a drug addict so close enough. Needless to say, the stock will go as far as the broad market takes it. It dropped on market weakness and it will rise on market strength. Neil Young did not have any impact on the corporation.

Yeah, the big problem is if someone like Taylor Swift comes out and threatens them. It doesn't move the needle much for a couple old folk rockers to leave, but if some big name current artists make a stink, that would have a bigger impact.

Many folks thought Neil was trying to sink the company or something. It was really as simple as him protesting the situation and not wanting to be associated with a dude. Neil is allowed to do this and Spotify will not be impacted (I'm sure Neil is fully aware of that). Both things can be true!

I agree with him that government officials and some grifters lied about what vaccines can and will do and that has been a big problem. It was very clear early on that they made promises that would eventually backfire. It was especially evident in the US, where they just tried really hard to promote vaccines because of their shitty uptake/skepticism and eventually had to lie to people. Which is a shame because the truth was powerful enough in itself.

His video was great though and it looks like he learned a lesson. Credit to him and Neil Young. Very respectful and productive ending to this saga, which I'm sure Neil wanted.

The best thing I'll say about this version of Rogan is that he's a douche and an idiot, but he's a generally well meaning douche and idiot. He very earnestly believes the things that he says and very honestly believes that he's doing a societal good by platforming the "freethinkers".

He's wrong almost across the board, but he 100% believes it all to be true. You're never going to see him in front of court a la Alex Jones claiming that it's all performance art. This is Joe Rogan doing Joe Rogan things.

Yeah, I'll never call Joe a grifter. I'll call him dumb and easily misled. But he's not an ill-intentioned bad person. The unfortunate part was always that he has a huge platform and diehard fans that hang on his every word of doing their own research and going against the consensus medical opinions. Problem is none of these people are qualified to go against the consensus medical opinion so we need to get rid of that culture of thinking that we can do our own research and go against the grain in the world of medicine.

The best tool we have as laymen navigating science is expert consensus. That hasn't changed just because the internet exists.

It was a pretty good video overall. Early on some people did get banned from various social media for posting Covid misinformation.

The idea here was never to "interview" people and ask pointed follow up questions. It's like people having a conversation over dinner, you don't know what topics you're going to discuss beforehand other than a few obvious things you know you'll talk about, plus whatever's going on in the news etc. And Covid is always in the news.

I respect the approach, it's just that the podcast has gotten so big now that he does have to modify his approach at least a little bit.

So now that the saga has appeared to come to an end, I think we can all agree (without toxicity for once from #BothSides) that this was a very lovely, productive closing. Credit to Neil for standing up for his principles and credit Joe for self-reflecting and promising change. Joe could have gone a completely different direction there (and IMO he would have if it was all an act, as ME mentioned) so bravo to him.

Well, the problem is that he did start modifying it about 2-3 years ago as he went anti-california, started platforming more fringe political commentators, went on this big weird anti censorship rip with any of the "IDW" or IDW adjacents that he was interested in.

The show went from being either conversation over dinner with interesting people or hanging out in the man cave watching fights/getting stoned with comedian buddies to a far more serious issues driven discussion with whatever manufactured grievance merchant was hot at the moment.

The show has been mostly divorced from it's original intent for a long time, and the move to Texas only exacerbated as for some reason Rogan thinks people in the LA comedy scene don't like him anymore and he developed a weirdo persecution complex. He started eating some shit in LA for his slow teetering towards Ayn Rand-ism a few years ago and instead of being introspective, he got pissy about it and moved to Texas.

I come back to this often, approx. 38,000 people die every year in car accidents in the United States. Now go through every other country. If death prevention is our only goal, then we should ban cars and save all those lives. Or the smaller # of people who die in alcohol-related accidents, we could force manufacturers to make cars that only go 60 mph, or that all require a breathalyzer to start.

And if we want to reduce all covid deaths, we have to fully lock down society for months. The issue is that nobody wants any of these things other than a very small percentage of people. These are complex issues that require complex solutions, and people will die as a result no matter which options you choose.

To some extent yes, but you don't literally move from one state to another because someone told you about Atlas Shrugged. There are lots of issues in California from out of control traffic, major homeless problem, too many people in urban areas, high taxes, etc. I sure as fuck would rather be in Cali than Tejas but Austin does sound like a pretty awesome place to live.

As for the guests, he dropped Dave Rubin after watching some of those Sam Seder videos lol, and Candace Owens because of her incredible breathtaking ignorance. I'm fine with someone who wants to talk to both Kyle Kulinski and Ben Shapiro. There have always been multiple approaches to political philosophy, some people very clearly align with either a liberal or conservative approach. And there's nothing wrong with that. Today's Republican Party is a totally different story, but to Joe's credit he generally tries to avoid overt political talk for the most part.
