OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

The hard part is that when public health measures work, people think we overreacted and will revolt against the tyranny. If we eliminated covid through drastic measures before it became a threat, half the planet would have said we allowed the government to control us and remove our freedoms over a fake beer virus. You can't win really.

Lots of people pointed this out in the early going. If the mitigation strategies work, everyone will say that we overreacted.

In Canada, it has been a delicate balance the entire time. Ontario will be a great case study in future years as a jurisdiction that was willing to lock down most things, but not willing to do so until we were on the verge of collapse of the health care system. The same approach, but with a timeline guided by scientific models instead of polling results, might have saved thousands of lives.

Dude, chill out and watch the video with an open mind. It's a very fair and honest response.
Fair enough. I played the video until Rogan said that if anyone suggested vaccines were not 100% effective, they would have their social media account deleted. That’s a lie. A silly and blatant lie. I’m glad to know he apparently redeemed himself.

Also, I also don’t really give a fuck what Joe Rogan thinks. Only even started to play it because you posted it and I find you to be, generally, a smart guy and an honest broker. Good to know that Rogan eventually dug himself out of a hole that he dug himself into.

If you could get the whole worlds cooperation than you probably could have had a much smaller lock down of China in late 2019.

But this whole thing started out with the exact opposite of cooperation.

Well I originally posted "fuck China" and then deleted it. But you inspired me.

Fuck China.

You are distorting what he said, people did get banned from various social media outlets for posting misinformation about covid in the early days. I'm not even saying they shouldn't have been, but to say it never happened is incorrect.

This is true. It's also true in the current days tho. Malone, Berenson and some others have recently gotten banned. No one got banned for saying that vaccines are sterilizing or don't block transmission. If that was the case, the worlds top virologists and immunologists would have been banned. No one got banned for suggesting lab leak. If that was true, one of the worlds top publishers wouldn't have agreed to publish a book entirely on the lab leak theory. And the author of the book wouldn't spend her entire days on social media preaching about the leak and trying to sell her book. That's not censorship to me!

TLDR: His video was great but it's okay to admit he used a lot of hyperbole in that one part of the video.

Oof. There’s definitely certain people who I wouldn’t want to have their rabid fans in my mentions and Rogan is one of em. Peterson, the Barstool fans, etc. It’s kinda fascinating how vicious they can get in defense of them.
ha rogan twitter is mad at me today.

Personally, I don’t really care what Rogan has to say at this point.

If he does stop pushing anti-vaccine conspiracy nonsense, quack cures and alt-right guests & talking points going forward, then great. But the damage is already done.

And I don’t expect Rogan to do any of these things, no matter what he says now.

They are the types that threaten to murder scientists for not agreeing with them, get banned from social media and then blame "censorship."

And yes, this happened specifically with the Rogan fanbase. They legitimately scare me.

And I have to say, Rogan’s hard turn into quackery during the pandemic shouldn’t be surprising. The guy’s always struck me as a grifter & snake oil salesman.

I’ve only listened to maybe a half-dozen of his podcasts, mostly when he’s booked a particularly interesting guest. And I’d always bust a gut laughing at “Alpha Brain” or other similar snake oil products he’d be hawking on the podcast.

I’m surprised he doesn’t have his own branded version of horse dewormer at this point.

Yeah, I'll never call Joe a grifter. I'll call him dumb and easily misled. But he's not an ill-intentioned bad person. The unfortunate part was always that he has a huge platform and diehard fans that hang on his every word of doing their own research and going against the consensus medical opinions. Problem is none of these people are qualified to go against the consensus medical opinion so we need to get rid of that culture of thinking that we can do our own research and go against the grain in the world of medicine.

The best tool we have as laymen navigating science is expert consensus. That hasn't changed just because the internet exists.
