That may be true of Southern Italian (which informs most North American Italian restaurants) but Northern Italian cuisine doesn't rely on the humble tomato.

Yeah I'm mostly basing it on my small town cuisine about 2 hours east of Rome (where I've spent most of my time and about 15% of my life). The food is fucking incredible but I don't think it's fair to call it complex or anything. It's ultimately my preference because of what I grew up with but in my younger adult stage after traveling to places that aren't Italy, I have come to the conclusion that yeah.. you could probably call Italian food "bland" by comparison. That may be true of Southern Italian (which informs most North American Italian restaurants) but Northern Italian cuisine doesn't rely on the humble tomato.
Ever have eggs Benedict?
So? Also Dijon, button, I put cayenne, salt etcWhich is crazy because hollandaise sauce is...eggs.
Twas' an exaggeration. I've spent a good percentage of my life living in Italy. I'm fully aware of the food and I'm fully aware that American Italian is its own genre. But the beauty in Italian food for me is its simplicity; letting quality ingredients stand out on their own. I can certainly see how people could find it "bland" compared to something like Mexican or even Thai food, for example. It's fucking amazing food. I'm not knocking it. But on a global scale, it's bland. It's not even true of southern italian. Tomato and cheese are pretty much condiments, not in any way integral ingredients.

And just FYI, Greek food is awesome when done right. Unfortunately most Greek restaurants do it fast, not right.
Moussaka mmmmm
Great, so you like hollandaise then.Yeah I cook my eggs with butter, salt and some hot stuff too.

May just depend on people's definitions of bland. I don't eat any curry but for me, but for me Italian food side by side something like that? Bland as all hell. From personal experience those that are into curries are often not the biggest fans of Italian food for that reason.Curried Chicken with Roti Trini Style might be my favourite dish ever. I love Biryani. I like a lot of spicy stuff with interesting flavours. But I still don't see Italian food as bland in comparison.
