OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

the opposite of wearing masks means more covid

We're wearing masks now in covid spreads like crazy even with them. I don't think it is a no-brainer. People who have been vaccinated spread covid. Yes these things are lower and it's a matter of for how long. So much of the time the masking is little more than security theater. When they have 20,000 people at the ACC for a Raptors game and the people are drinking and eating their masks are going to be coming off for much of it. Why even bother having the mandate to wear them into the building. It seems silly and ridiculous.

We're going to open up just open up. Me wearing a mask as I walk into a bar and sit down to read a menu only to take it off 5 minutes later as soon as my beer arrives? That is pure security theater and nothing else.

her point is clearly (to my eyes at least) that part of your stated rationale in support of eliminating masking requirements is questionable.

and I mean, if you really want me to dig I am rather confident there is a good body of medical evidence that supports the efficacy of masks.

but I really do not get the opposition to masks. I don't know what I am missing that makes people hate them so much.

for me, it is a small cloth that I put on my face that is hardly even an inconvenience anymore, and I do it to help protect the wellbeing of everyone around me. seems like a fair trade. I will openly admit I do not understand why people are not only unwilling to make that trade but object so strongly to it.
 
It really is quite amazing how people object to wearing a mask, imagine these people existed during a time when they had to make real sacrifices? like the great depression or the world wars. Yeah not everyone is wearing masks properly, your reaction should be wow those people are morons not "I WANT TO BE A MORON TOO".
 
The argument that people are getting covid anyway so you shouldn’t do simple things that reduce transmission is a dumb one.

We do plenty of things every day that reduce but don’t eliminate risk.

I don’t actually think you’re stupid, I think you don’t want to do something so you’ve grasped for a dumb argument to justify it.

1. masks
2. rapid tests
3. hospital capacity
4. vaccine boosters
5. treatments
6. proper hvac

etc etc

masks are the easiest thing to do

Have you made any attempt at having compassion for someone who disagrees with you or are you just that entrenched?

I've been wearing them for two years.

The sooner we stop the better.

And as a civil society, we get to discuss, debate and disagree.

I support vaccines.

I have supported lots of things through this pandemic.

Something that is no big deal to you, is a big deal to me.

There's an opportunity here if you're willing to start from curiosity.

Except this isn't actually true. When we wear masks properly, covid doesn't spread like crazy. It's the lack of compliance that leads to the rapid spread. There's a reason Japan's omicron wave was 30-40% the size of ours (when corrected for population difference).

So, again, more judgement. Less curiosity.

Not an antivaxer.

Not a convoy person.

Talked to some and it's the judgmental self righteousness they've encountered that has tipped the scale for them.

The argument that has come up here of "masks forever' to protect people from the flu is what I want no part of.

Get the young kids vaxed, then make masks a choice. Wear them all you want.

As soon as I get to stop, I will.

Yes, but then I see the same person basically saying that you're entirely good with giving me whatever airborn diseases you've got because masks make you uncomfortable and my compassion kind of fucks off at that point.

Mandate vaccines if you must, but don't waste your time unless you're gonna mandate regular boosters. Both of these things work for transmission. But stuff like cloth masks or 2 doses of vaccine back in June is as good as useless.

Yep. But we're a society that settles for theatre over effectiveness an amazing percentage of the time.
