OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Hand wash while you're at home, sanitizer when you don't have access to a sink because we all can't help ourselves touching our faces without thinking about it. Though I've gotten much better.

Make your own.

Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerin, distilled/boiled water. Put it in a mini squirt bottle and you're good. Sub out the water and glycerin for aloe vera gel if you can find it out there. I haven't been able to source it here. Make sure the final product is at minimum 60% alcohol (so if you're using 70% rubbing alcohol, do the math to ensure the final product is 60% strength...91 or 99% is better for this purpose, but use whatever you can find)

ya i was trying to find the aloe vera gel at the start but gave up

got a friend that is making me some - 1L of it

From what we know, isn’t soap better for killing this virus than hand sanitizer anyway?

yes but it is less transportable
at home i just use soap and water

when im out though i like to clean before i tough my car for example

How many times do I have to tell Zeke.

Do not. Wash. Your chickens before cooking. It is actually less safe to do so. Fucking Zeke.

I've been told by the many Caribbean people I work with that you should wash every bit of meat with lime juice and vinegar. I know someone that washes ground beef which seems insane to me.

Yeah it's based on old wives tales. Never do that. It just creates a better environment for bacteria.

Going for a big grocery shop tomorrow. Anyone have any good suggestions on smart things to focus on that might be hard to find later or even just good ideas? This board has actually been a really good resource.

I’d like to believe it’s because the projections aren’t horrifyingly bad, but they don’t want to give people a false sense of security and have them start easing up on isolation & physical distancing.

That seems unlikely, though.

might sound stupid but grab cold and flu medicine - once everybody gets sick with mild symptoms you will want something to help

other than buy stuff you can freeze (meat, fruit)

things that i found are already low that i did not think would be a big deal......
baking supplies - flour, sugar, baking soda, etc

Steel cut oats, frozen veggies and fruits, ground meats are good because they don't take up much freezer space (pack them down as thin as possible in a freezer bag and stack them), buy some cabbage onions carrots etc (whatever you prefer) and pickle them, flour, a package of p.a.n. to make arepas (very easy to make and filling, it's pre cooked corn meal). I'm missing things but those have been the most useful things for me so far.

I've never done this before but it's a good idea. I love pickled onions. Might try carrots as well.
