OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Had a friend get taken down twice in the last 3 months.. just got his second infection now. Why? His second exposure was high and frequent. First time he got the vid he isolated from his family, no one else caught it. Second time his wife brought it home and he was with her all day every day for a week thinking he couldn't catch it again.

And conveniently the first study has come out evaluating how good our immunity is.

Tldr: it's fine but leaky. And it's all about exposure duration.

WSJ report — BA.2.86—dubbed “pirola” by a group of scientists on social media who name notable variants—has been detected in only about a dozen people, but it has surfaced in all corners of the world. What’s troubling about this variant, scientists say, is that it contains more than 30 mutations on the spike protein, which is what helps the virus enter cells and cause an infection. This means it might be able to evade current vaccines and previous infections more easily, and it likely won’t be a great match with the fall booster expected to be approved soon.

Bad time to catch the vid right now because soon a new variant that will completely evade your immunity will take over. I've noticed a lot of people in my circle currently have it.. The uptick right now is real. And it hasn't been pleasant for any of 'em.

Where did the science land when it came to masks?….did they prevent us from catching it, prevent us from spreading it? Prevent other colds/flus but not Covid?

I just love wearing em, cause it decreases the odds someone I don’t want to talk to will recognize me, and ensnare me in their death trap of small talk…..but I also never caught Covid, didn’t get the cold or flu.

…but yeah, what’s the gold standard studies I should check out that have the strongest evidence one way or the other.

TLDR: Crazy immune evasion but nowhere near as intrinsically transmissive as current circulating variants. So we have variants that are infective as fuck out there but most people have solid immunity to it and this one looming in the background probably taking down people with strong immunity. Battle of immune evasion vs intrinsic transmissibility.

Of course, there's no reason the new variant can't pick up some mutations that make it thrive and increase the intrinsic transmissibility.. As long as it circulates there's no reason it can't do that. But for now this explains why this isn't another omicron style event with crazy ridiculous growth for now.

EDIT: Some more info on what's likely to occur based on one hypothesis:

So yeah, don't worry about this. What aren't you worried about?
I'm not worried about the raging hemorrhoids I've been battling recently. There is nothing wrong with blowing out your asshole once in a while. It is perfectly normal and healthy. I will probably need reconstructive asshole surgery, but again, nothing to worry about. It's good. We're good.
Hemorrhoids? Asking for a friend.
Yes.
