OT: MLB Thread

Yeah, true. I wish Bergevin made moves like that. The second wild card opens up a lot. Giants were the NL's second wild card last year and they won the WS

Not to fully excuse Bergy, but it's a little easier in baseball. Talent is much more abundant, including down on the farm, so moving players to address holes in the lineup/rotation/bullpen happens a lot more regularly.

Also , its harder to make the playoffs in baseball, so a lot more teams are in dump mode.

According to canadian sports networks, I'm supposed to care about Toronto's team.

I remember wearing my Expos cap here in Vancouver shortly after moving here in 92. The Jays were on their run to the World Series and a cashier at the grocery store asked me why I wasn't wearing a Jays cap. I simply said "What has Toronto ever done for you? " But, bandwagoners that Vancouverites are, the city went nuts when the Jays won. Of course they also jumped on the Mariners bandwagon in 95.

Well ...after Price the Jays starting rotation is nothing special, but that's the only weakness on the team now.

Goodbye AA too, for that matter. Part of the reason why he's making all these moves is as a last-ditch attempt to save his own skin. If only Bergevin or Therrien were as worried they might finally do something bold.

I think AA saved himself more time with that Donaldson deal. He would not be allowed to do this if ownership wasn't behind him.

Baseball isn't the NHL. THe rebuild is easier.

I don't see these moves at doing much for the Jays aside from maybe squeaking into a wild card berth. They don't have enough to win it all. So in the end they'll have given away the farm just to play a couple of extra games.

Yes, but aren't you always saying you have to go for it when the window is open

Depends on what they're going for. If "going for it" means making the post-season so that the owners can make a bit of money from the one or two extra gate receipts, fine. But in order to go for a championship you need to be better to begin with than the Jays were when they went on this deadline spending spree. What the Jays are doing is no different than when an NHL team hoving around 9th place blows their brains out on deadline day just to squeak into the last playoff spot and get eliminated in the first round.

The Habs finished 2nd overall in the NHL last season. They should be "going for it" now, even if they wind up giving away draft picks and prospects to do it. But the Jays aren't so close that they should be stripping the cupboards bare on rentals.

The Jays are a better team than their record showed. I would liken it more to, say if Pittsburgh was struggling in 9th and decided to deal their top prospect for a rental.

MLB is wide open. The Jays don't need to be better than they were before making these deals. It's far easier to make the playoffs than in the past. The Giants won the WS last year by getting in by the second WC.

It's been 21 years. They need to play competitive baseball in September.

Giants last year were better tha Toronto's team this year. We had also shown an ability to win when it counted, something your team has not shown in 22 years.

AA can only move if the owner says yes for the $$$. He's hand tight. That is why the Jays need a Dan Duquette to influence the owner to spend because the window of opportunity is closing for the Jays in 2-3 years.

Oh no

I heard VERY positive interest in being involved in a #Montreal expansion franchise was shown recently, by a NY based person of note.
